Competition ideas thread

dont think about it too hard cus its a nasty paradox, or loop or whatever.. just like pinocchio saying "now my nose will grow"...

I think that the competition should be something that the users have to earn by for example creating a new logo or poster or treasure hunt.

I felt that after finding the treasure in the last competition that i deserved a place in that competition even though im new and the competition produced good odds and attracted some new users which the website should be aiming to do.

I think that a competition with the number of posts would be slightly unfair to some users who are newer to :oc3d: and wouldnt attract any new users to use the website.

I agree it would be a bit unfair if the post limit was very high but what if it's 30 posts? Most competitions run for about a month, even members who register for the competition would just have to post one constructive post a day.

While it's a good idea to say X posts are needed during the competition period, I find on the forums where they do that, you get a lot of un-needed posts and thread revivals. It's a lot of extra work for mods to keep on top of the (essentially) spam posts. But if they're ok with that, then go for it :p

This is true we may get people just posting to get in the competition and we dont wont the forum to turn into a spamming site just because everyone wants to win great prizes. we want the website to have helpful and useful posts and discussions. :)

I think rather than what can oc3d give you, you should be asking what can you do for the forum, other than reviewing......

The oc3d coffers are not what you think they would be, and if we dont get the hits on the site needed then the review samples and prizes will just stop......

Then how about we do this thing where us, the current members, invite people to join OC3D and whoever has invited the most users, they get a prize. This way the website get hits AND more users.

Novatech did this recently.

people could cheat this, proxy > acc > new proxy > acc > repeat

Not if you have to make 25 more or less constructive posts like on novatech.

Personally I don't like the idea of silver/gold memberships simply because the community is built on respect. If you start putting people in a higher place because they pay money it will most probably create a certain elitism, and the lack of that makes this forum as good as it currently is.

Okay, so things members could do for oc3d (non original ideas included):

- Posting. More content on the forums = more members and activity

- Member reviews. See above. Also, this covers hardware that would normally never be reviewed like budget accessoires etc.

- Folding. We get seen in the FAH stats and who doesn't want to help science?

- Graphics / new logo design.

- Suggestion from someone I know: designing a new vBulletin oc3d skin for selection?

<edit>Another suggestion:

- Have members put a link to oc3d in their sig on other forums, whoever gets the most (unique) referrals wins. Will **** some people off though.</edit>

After seeing all the talent in the member reviews section (Mul? :p) I'd love to see another member reviews competition. Maybe let every participant send in their best review and the best X will get it featured on overclock3d.net? That should attract some new member reviewers and maybe some of them like the reviewing hobby and review everything that doesn't run away in time for oc3d :)

mabey a donations thing? get a badge next to your name or something? or each post gets x amount of points then you can buy more badges to go under your post count, have stuff like equipment manufacturers, + bonus ones for winning competions and stuff? i seem to remember a forums i used to use having similar to that, ill try find it and get a screeny for an example, middle of a halo game atm thats why its not worded to well,

adding to ::

like the longer the post more points

Donations and funds is not something we want to get into.

We do not want your money, its not that. A rich forum isnt a good forum.

Doesn't mean to say it can't be a generous forum !

True but if all the money is spent on a prize it's all gravy baby :D.

we shall just have to see, but I really dont belive its a good look for the forum.

We just want to bring oc3d to a wider audience, if we can do that the manufacturers will throw stuff at us. As it is we probably give away more than a certain forum/magazine combo ;)

True man true. Have you looked at getting any advertisement inside computer mags? I seen a post of some hardware with OC3D logo on it :).

Fair point, but does anyone really want this forum to go commercial ? In my opinion, the one thing that seperates oc3d from the rest is our ability to tell it like it is. Tom's got the right idea - keep it simple, keep it oc3d.

I like the homely feel here, always have, but dont want it to go ott.

We have some plans, but none envolve paid for advertising.

All we need is more active and responsible members

How about a totally random treasure hunt?

One question's answer leads to another totally random question. In the end lies the answer.

You could have multiple small prizes so that they are given out in order of finding the answer.

Or a massively huge one that only one person can have.

Sounds good no?

I agree the homely feel to this website is mainly the reason i joined as i felt i could ask more experienced people for help.

What are the plans you have so far Tom

We could have monthly little prizes for new comers so when they register their account they get put in a prize draw for that month. but we would need advertisements of some sort even if we asked if companies would give us free advertisement
