Cleaning PCBS (how to) the mayhem way

Whether old and dirty or just badly looked after sometimes you need to clean you PCB so that you can work on them.

In this little tut I’m going to clean a couple of arcade PCBs because well there old and dirty and haven’t really been looked after well. Also they are with a bit of money :).

So there are several ways of cleaning PCBS and some ways can serials get expansive and well who likes to pay out money when they don’t need to. So ill teach you a cheap ass method.

What you will need is

1. Deionised water

2. Vinegar

3. A soft brush

4. A Tub to hold it all in

5. A Cooker

First i start off buy looking at the boards I’m going to clean and as you can see there not clean by any means. There is years upon years of dirt on them.

Next we take some Deionised water and pour it in our tub (well i don’t I do it in my lasses sink but you better off using a plastic tub, I’m just a lazy ass).

Now add 1 cap full of Vinegar and swish it about in the tub / sink.

Now after removing and screws drop in you PCB and being carful give it a rub down with your brush. The softer the brush the better and be careful how you go about it. You don’t what to knock off any vital components.

Now once you dune this stick it in your draining board for a few moments for the liquid to come off. Now what i do then is empty out the old dirty liquid and give the bowl a clean out and then i rinse off the PCS with clean Deionised water to make sure all the vinegar is not present as this can destroy the board.

Again put it on the draining board again for about 10 to 15 min to get as much of the water off as possible.

Now using a electric cooker (fan assisted ones work best) set it to about 60c or just a little above its lowest point and let it warm up.

Now put you PCBs on paper and place in the oven. Keep the over door open a little so that the vapours can be let out .

Now cook for about 30 min to 1 hour keeping an eye on you PCB baking. Now once these have dried i personally then stick them in a warm airing cupboard for 2 days just to make sure they are dried out properly.

Thats it you now have clean new looking PCB’s.

Have fun.

Oh if you do this i am not responsable if you mess it up :)

Now i just need to wire it up for a modern day arcade systemfor some dammed good button bashing (if it work that is)

Yes it works fine for mother bords. It allso works fine for GFX cards and any thing. If doing a mother bord remove all fittings first.. The lower the setting on the cooker though the better. so between 40c to 60c is brill.. 80c is a little high.

Just allways keep an eye on it.

LOL don't put in the oven!

Shouldn't be anything wrong in using the oven, as long as Mayhem says - the heat is low and ur watching it.

Personally I like using an airing cupboard. Some people use hairdryers or low power blow torches. It all really depends on how much time u want to give it.

Wasn't being serious lol. Heat does tend to bend plastic so you could very well end up with a bent board. Unlikely but I wouldn't risk it.

erm PCB bords are not plastic ... and for them to bend you need pressure and heat not just heat.

There is plastic items on the board correct? I thought there was a plastic top coating on the boards? They used to use wax or something right?

Either way I would rather dry it by drip drying, obviously that's just my opinion. I was only joking btw about the bending, normally I can do sarcasm, but I guess you all can't read my minds:D.

But SERIOUSLY, no sarcasm. The person needs to watch the board, I wouldn't trust myself with anything like this since I manage to burn toast >.<:D.

ROTFLMAO

any way after working on all the bords ive finally finished.

Ive clean 23 PCBs out of them the games i have in arcade for are.

Nintendo VS. UniSystem Super Mario (Nintendo) UK Verion ( £ Unknown)

Track & Field (Konami) UK (£45)

Track & Field (Konami) USA (£45)

(Nichibutsu) Terra Cresta (£75)

(Konami) Konami GT - (Extremly rare and hard to get hold off. Last ebay selling price £250 / £300)

(Konami) Bubble Bobble (worth £200)

(Konami) Karate Champ (£?)

(Tehkan) Star Force (£?)

Mrs Pacman (£150)

Pacman (£150)

And a few other spares. that i dont know what they are . it will take time to find out.

So including all the cleaning stuff and paying for the bords came to £40

How ever even though these are worth the ammount of money stated i wont be selling any of them there for my collection only :) I will sell one bord to a collector wich is the GT bord as i have no use for it.

Yeh mate they wernt bought for profit reasons though just to boost my collection up. I have ever have got some spare cash that will be put into buying a couple more that i am after such as commando and tekken 3.

Im off to another arcade next week as well in hope that i get access to there back room :) might as well.

yeah but the money ur makin from selling other ones will help u boost your collection up, tekken 3 is brilliant :) loved that game in the arcade i owned it :)

Nice guide to cleaning pcbs. :) Is the vinegar really necessary? And with cleaning motherboards I'm guessing that you would have to be really careful to ensure that all liquid is dried from inside pci slots etc. Must take a long time to dry.

Not realy as using Disonased water is none conductive. The vinigure ammount id 1 cap to 2 Ltrs and this just help remove some of the crap off the bords.

Drying time at 60 to 7c is about 1/2 hour in the oven how ever if you running a gas oven forget it. If doing it the airing cubord way about 3 to 5 days does the job (airing cubord needs to be warm.).
