cheap 8800GT or cheap 9600gt

Hi guys, i know i can find a lot of topics in google about this, but you always help me a lot and your reviews helped me a lot...

Well thanks to your reviews i got a XFX 8600GT Fatal1ty it was an awesome card, i got a 8600GT MSI but wasnt as great as the xfx.

Now i need to buy a new card (long story...) and checking prices i found a XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB(PV-T88P-YDF4) as the same price as a 9600GT asus or msi, i dont see too many difference just stream processors (8800 doubles 9600) and core clock (9600 is 50-100mhz faster than this 8800).

I want a good card for a looooooong time, i dont plan to change it until i see starcraft 3 or wow 2

So 8800 or 9600? im asking this because i dont understand that difference, i mean will more steam processors will be better than more core clock?or will be the same?

I'd go for either the 8800GT XXX (112 stream) or a 8800GTS 512 (128 stream). The GT XXX is probably your best option, as it's clocked a few megahurtz faster than the GTS, and it's dirt cheap. I'm assuming you're going for XFX.

I'm gonna go for a GT XXX myself, for my new budget build.

Thanks for the answer, i like the 8800 because its a high end one(cheap but high), but could you explain me whats does those stream processors and core clock means plz?because at nvidia ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/graphics_cards_buy_now.html ) theres no great difference between 8800gt and 9600gt

I know its of no use to you now, but OCUK have just had 2 storming offers on 88GT's.. £110 for a PNY and £130 for an EVGA.. Good deals, flatmate got one. All gone now mind.

I'd go with an 88GT over a 96, personally.

8800 GT

The 8800 GT, codenamed G92, was released on October 29, 2007. The card is the first to transition to 65 nm process, and supports PCI-Express 2.0.[8] It has a single-slot cooler as opposed to the double slot cooler on the 8800 GTS and GTX, and uses less power than GTS and GTX due to its 65 nm process. While its core processing power is comparable to that of the GTX, the 256-bit memory interface and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory often hinders its performance at very high resolutions and graphics settings. The 8800 GT, unlike other 8800 cards, is equipped with the PureVideo 2 engine for GPU assisted decoding of the H.264 and VC-1 codecs. Performance benchmarks at stock speeds place it above the 8800GTS (640MB and 320MB versions) and slightly below the 8800GTX. A 256MB version of the 8800GT which lower stock memory speeds (1.4 GHz as opposed to 1.8 GHz) but with the same core is also available. Performance benchmarks have shown that the 256 MB version of the 8800 GT has a considerable performance disadvantage when compared to its 512 MB counterpart, especially in newer games such as Crysis.

The release of this card presents an odd dynamic to the graphics processing industry. At an NVIDIA projected initial street price of around $200, this card outperforms the ATI flagship HD2900XT and HD3870 in most situations, and even NVIDIA's own 8800GTS (previously priced at an MSRP of $400). The card, only marginally worse in synthetic and gaming benchmarks than the 8800GTX, also takes much of the value away from NVIDIA's own high end card. This release was shortly followed by the (EVGA) 8800GTS SSC (the original 8800GTS re-released with 96+ (112) shader processor units), and ATI's counter, the HD3800 series.

88GT, without a doubt.

I got one when they came out to replace my 640mb gts and it has always been there for me in between upgrades. It is a cracking card. I'd put an aftermarket air cooler on it like the hr03 iirc.

Reflash the bios with higher voltages and clock it up!

sorry my bad, i read this review http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews...._gt_xxx_alpha_dog_edition_-_g92_performance/1 but i thoguht it was from january but its from november, thats why i thought it wasnt a g92 and pretty old too.

Arctic Cooling Acellero S1: Clicky

IMO nothing beats it, its so cheap and works so well. I don't run a fan on it and the temps stay under 50 degrees. It really is excellent.

QFT - i have one on my 7900GT - Never tops 35/40 idle, and rarely touches 50 under load.

I had the same choice and went for the Gigabyte GV-NX88T512HP 8800GT 700MHZ with a copper Zalman fan (type B). I head the type A's have probs with the fan.

It's only been a week but I have no regrets so far. It even got a few good reviews.

OCUK have got the old 8800GTS 320meg going for only £88 if its a tight budget, I uaw this (XFX XXX naturally ) and its a good card, though it is not th XXX XFX one, £88 is a steal

The 320 and 640 GTS-cards use the G80-chip, not the G92. But still, it's a good price if you're going for a ultrabudget PC.

In terms of size its about 4 cm wider than the card. I've not had any trouble with it sizes, its fitted in my alst 2 cases fine, Antec SLK and a Coolermaster CM690. Its about the same length as the card.

Giskard - if you haven't bought the card yet, I'm selling a new MSI 8800gt with a good factory overclock and factory fitted Zalman vf1000 cooler fitted - unused apart from testing; working absolutely fine.

It's fast and quiet and has headroom for further overclocking.

If you're interested, pm me and I'll do you a good price on it.

I tried it last night and couldn't hear it.

With the budget GT's you'll know the fans are working.

A premium GT card like this saves mucking about with aftermarket coolers - and I'll probably be able to do it cheaper than the one you're after.

ps. be aware it takes two slots because of the double height cooler
