I'd like to know how y'all do the cd/dvd less setups??? I know you can install windows from a flash drive and I'll be getting one to do that later. But what about ur apps and games??? ISO'd to a hdd??? and installed from that??

I'm seriously considering removing my optical drive to better enhance my rigs front and new paint scheme

I got an external USB DVD-RW drive, works with my netbook too, so double whammy

hmmm ok I get it lol actually I thought about that solution as well might def look into that usb 3.0 dvd drives worth it yet??

Doubt USB 3 is necessary tbh, USB 2 is what, 480Mbps? Doubt you would reach 60MB/s write on a DVD, though

i keep all installation files (applications) on my NAS applicances. so i install using smb/cifs network connection. with games that's a little more difficult. for some i use ISO's (also kept on NAS, locally mounted with daemon tools), for others i can't get around using - depending on the pc - an internal or external optical device. the latter also has already been mentioned in this thread.

what i did not try so far is mounting ISO's directly on the NAS and presenting them for example as iSCSI targets. i have no idea what copy protection will say about such a setup or if it'll even work.

but finally there is such nice platforms as STEAM where you will not need a CD or DVD drive at all. that's what i use the most for installing/reinstalling my games.

in order to install a "standard" office pc i do not use any cd or dvd at all.

You could just install all your games etc. and then remove the optical?

That's what I do. I only keep one pc with a perminant optical attached.

If you want to be fancy, you can get a backplate with SATA+Power, just extends to your mobo port. Hotswapping will depend on your mobo setup, I haven't looked into that much.

Network storage is where it's at in the long run.

yeah I was thinking along the lines of a server type setup as well. And just mount ISO's on it for what I needed. But that would entail another rig lol. I also thought that i could use some of my HDD's I have laying around in some kind of external docking or enclosure style setup. The idea of steam I dont like I used steam before and I hate having to re-dl whenever I make changes. And removing the optical and re-installing it when needed doesnt sound like fun lol as my case is under my desk and i have to remove it from the back to do anything to it. Not to mention its a steel case loaded up its a beast in weight.

i just useing a slim usb 2 dvd wr drive but as i have a server i thinking of making the dvd drive on the server as a share so eny of my computers can get acsess to the server dvd drive for all my cd's and dvd's

thats a good idea and I was thinking the same. nBut as I only have 2 rigs mine and my lil ones and we dont have any software in common that would be a waste. So I am thinking I'd just get a docking station and ISO my stuff to a HDD anytime I needed to ass something to it I could simply use my lil ones rig to put it to HDD

been trying lol but its not that simplewith this case. I have stealthed many many drives in the past and this one is a bugger. already modified the baycover bracket so the drawer slides out I just need to find a way to attach the screen to the drawer. as it sits back like 3/4" from it. basically the pic shows the modded slot bracket and screen the bracket needs to be stationary while the screen moves with the drawer
