CCL Computers - Getting into F@H please help!

I was reading this thread on my phone in my hotel room and I just had to run to the car and get my laptop to make a post

Welcome to the team!

I just want to add that if you really are looking for the best ppd for the power consumed, an SR-2 rig with something like dual Xeon E5645s is by far the best bet. You will get 120k+ ppd consuming maybe 300-400 watts if you get em to around 3.8ghz. At over 4ghz you can hit 150k + ppd. Comparatively you can stick 3 580GTXs in that 980X rig and get around 100k ppd (heavily overclocked) and be pulling over 1kilowatt from that setup. The only downside to SR-2 is the initial cost but that shouldn't be a problem for CCL

Of course I'm only throwing this out there so that you know your options. SR-2 setups are pretty expensive initially so it can be a turnoff for most. But when you're talking a 600+ watt difference (x2 if you're running 2 of these things) the energy savings can pile up pretty quick.

When are you looking to have these set up? as i should be up in yorkshire sometime after christmas, its been a while since ive been in to the showroom, wouldnt mind having a quick nip in on the way past if there set up, tho saying that i may run in and pick up a d14 as ive been meaning to order one.

You sir are a legend, if I can get something like that running on a 27" monitor it would be perfffeccct!

Hopefully just after Christmas, the space in our new showroom has been reserved for it already. (Check out our facebook page for pictures and plans)

Will run the designs for customer information on F@H through you guys when we come to make the assets to "skin" a section of the showroom to sell the merits of folding.

The SR-2 idea is a brilliant one, my only issue is I have 3x 980x processors sat on my desk for this project already. Motherboards I will be working on now.

It certainly looks fancy.

Is it possible to export the information from HFM in a feed in any way?

Or is it open source?

My thoughts are maybe get one of the guys here to write a display program, the stats window looks brilliant but I think it would be lost on most of our customer base and could even put them off trying Folding at Home.

Yer the viewer pic I linked to was with a 580 running, and an SR-2 based build would be epic but as you say you have the 980x x3 already. The mobo's should just be whatever can run the most GPUs with stability and without excess heat. With HFM I'd have thought the best route would be to contact them directly and state what you're planning because you never know they may have suggestions or so that'll really help! Also with the monitors you could maybe have a video running on one that explains what F@H does, how it contributes to research and how it works etc so people can stick on headphones or so and have a quick watch, like. 5 min vid and you could make your own CCL one that'll be an easy way to get people to see and understand without having to read or have staff constantly explaining

Has anyone used Tesla or Quadro cards for folding?

I could get my hands on a load of Tesla cards potentially...

The tesla 20 series cards are supposed to be based on the GF100 core with 448 cuda cores so that's similar to the GTX 470 but they come with either 3GB or 6GB of GDDR5 memory and I'm unsure of the impact of that on folding performance but that gives a way to look at the folding performance, should be similar but maybe a bit higher than GTX 470 performance. The 10 series is similar to the GTX 280 I think

When i my 8800gt folding (going to start it up again this afternoon) i was curious about the porformance of the quadros (would never be able to afford one like) and spent an evening on google and from what i found it looks like there is mabey 5% more ppd at most from the equivilent standard cards probably due to the extra streams/cuda cores or something if i remember right.

Could stick some 460's in 1 tower, some 570's in another and 580's in the 3rd to show the difference in points bewteen the cards if a customer is tempted to get one but want to see the best points per watt/£ ect.

Mobo wise either a P6T7, R3E or UD9 would probably be your best bet as 4 pci-e's ftw.

I know with FAHmon I used to have it set to upload the stats via ftp to a webserver. I think you can do the same with HFM.net. If you could get the results into a MySQL database, I could quickly rig up a php script to read and layout the info. We could ignore some of the info and only post the relevant stuff.

I'm away from my folding machines, but can someone check and see what kind of output HFM.net can do?

We have some quite nifty programmers internally who could take something from a database and work wonders with it on the website and in the showroom if they got chance. Great offer though and if the basic programs can generate the information it would just fit in perfectly.

When you said "one of the guys here" I thought you meant oc3d,

. I've been thinking about writing our own personal stats db so people can check on their clients remotely etc. It wouldn't be the official stats, but it would be nice to be able to compare what HFM says to what official stat servers say. If anyone would actually be interested in something like this, I'll give it a go after Christmas.

Ahh remember I am speaking with my us, our, we, colleagues, person sat next to me as members of the slightly quirky, often sedated rampaging bull that is CCL.

Given me a lot of food for thought in this thread and I am well on my way to getting VGA and motherboards sorted now.

Thanks guys.

There should be a preferences tab under edit and a web generation or ftp setup of some kind within that sub menu if my memory serves me correctly!

Downloaded HFM here to check it out. You can generate the file as an html or XML.

Guarding a few Teslas in our data center... their biggest advantage

against GTX4xx/GTX5xx is the memory, cuz' they have 6GB GDDR5/GPU

which is even ECC enabled.

The shader is overclocked and the core slightly underclocked, cuz'

it's not this important when talking about GPGPU.

So... when everything runs bad you can have less PPD with a tesla,

but I guarantee that you have less PPD/£.

Maybe I can install a GPU3-client for a night or two, but first I'd

have to talk to the other admins :-)

Working on getting the motherboards for these machines sorted, with a lot of the reps taking a break over Christmas it will be a slow process.

January will be the time for hitting it hard and should have some good success.

Main one will be getting graphics cards delivered, once I have those the project is very much a go!
