Caviar Green

Ever since the HDD shortage, I haven't been able to find even a 300Gb Caviar Black hard drive for under $100. A 1Tb HDD is about $180.

But I found a Caviar Green hiding in the HDD category on NewEgg for $90... and it's 1.5Tb.

I've heard that green drives are very slow, so is it not worth getting it? I have an SSD that I put my OS and games on, but I would like to have a large drive for storing data on and perhaps installing a game or two when my SSD fills up. Will they be ok for games?

I on the other hand hate those. High latencies, mediocre sequential read speeds. But you could do worse on the other hand, for example by buying any hitachi stuff :-)

Having a look at the prices of current 7Krpm >1TB drives - 90$ is a bargain since the flooding in Thailand.

I guess I'll try it out.

Thanks.

I am using 2x 1,5tb greens and they are very good. I use them for storage and they are perfectly silent and reliable

It's not suggested to run games from a Green drive, but they will have no problem with them. You may just have to be a bit patient with loading in games as WD Green drives are only 5400RPM as opposed to 7200RPM from the Black drives. I've installed Windows and games on them and they have no problems at all. They've always been cool and quiet as well.

I wouldn't worry about running games off of WD Green drives considering once the game is loaded it's in the memory

I have a WD Green and on BF3 I'm often the first person on the map on a map change, even people in my clan with SSDs load slower.

Also how much slower are greens?

People are just hardware snobs and think everyone should have SSDs

The WD Greens run really cool & are quiet also.

The above chart doesn't show the speed of 1TB WD Greens. Won't they be slower because of the smaller density?

I haven't used one myself, but a lot of you guys have said that they are pretty good so I think Cyanide would be happy with one.

It was on the NewEgg.ca deal of the week last week. I bought it for a friend but was thinking of trading him for my smaller WD Blue.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll be sticking with the green.

I personally use one in my media pc which i sometimes use for gaming and TBH they are quite good very quiet and if you dont mind waiting a little longer if loading things from it then it will be a good buy

That explains why I couldn't find it. At that price I would have picked up 10 or so just to have on the shelf here at work. They are listed at $139 on the US newegg.

I got a 1TB Green drive, read/writes are around the 100MB/s mark, I do run a few games off of the drive because not all of them fit on my SSD, and I've not come across any issues. It runs cool and quiet, sometimes there is a bit of noise, but it really isn't that noticeable.
