Car photos/discussion thread

My father in law recently parted from his Ferrari Dino 246GT that he has owned from new (he was gutted, but he's now in his eighties). That car had to have petrol additives.

Anyone fancy doing your dream 5-car garage, say capped at £2m so you can't have 4 Veyrons and a Wraith, include mods?

GTR R35
Nissan 370Z
Toyota GT86
Alfa Romeo 4C
BMW M3 or something like that, not really a big follower of BMW but I love it.

An interesting read for you. :)

At the end of the day it all comes down to the octane rating that your engine was designed to work with.

Ah ok I see, thanks.

Nope not common. Perhaps some performance stuff from pre-90's when 4-star was still mainstream wouldn't take too kindly to low octane depending how they were setup but that's pretty much going to be an impossible situation as they wouldn't like the 15% ethanol either and would be so obsolete or specialist nobody would cock that up.

JR

Right, that's what I thought.

Pretty interesting stuff that I assume most people don't think twice about.

looks like you love your gtr, I'm not the biggest fan of the gtr, mainly because I know I can probably never own one unless I win the lottery, but I'm in love with the R35, stock its a meh but with proper work it will look badass and pull like a frickin donkey on steroids.

Lamborghini Reventon
BMW M6 coupe, I sat in one of these at Goodwood (i sat in nearly everything) and it made me the most happy
VW Touraeg V8 TDI or maybe an M550D, hmmm two BMW's or not.
Dodge Coronet RT '69 unrestored and period tuned
International Harvester Model R rat rod with a Detroit Diesel 8V72 (bigger if possible) 2-stroke, IDK even know how, I just want that noise in a stupid old rusty truck body to scare people with. everything about it must be totally illegal anywhere in the EU

I think that would cover most of my various driving moods, mostly torque monsters.

jaguar xj 220
nissan gtr R32 (tuned pref super charger vs turbo)
nissan fairlady z with same engine as the above nissan gtr and 4wd system
and that's it.

This concurs from what I've briefly read. Are there any common road cars that would suffer very badly from 'low octane' fuel?
If the engine management system is worth its salt, it'll be able to adapt to whatever fuel you feed it. My saab can run on anything from 91 up. I have run it on vpower for a long time and found that if i drop back to fuelsave it performs virtually identically (with similar mpg), though the knock detection light blinks on occasion. I know a lot of folk who add toluene and xylene thinners in small quantities to a full tank of fuel to act as an octane booster. (significantly cheaper to buy in bulk vs a bottle of stp/nitrox/redex etc)

5 car dream list for me:
Saab 900 T16S
Ferrari 308GTB
Datsun 280z
BMW 635csi
Porsche 911 targa 993
