Can't decide i5 or i7

i5 2500k 3.3 Ghz or the i7 2600k 3.4 Ghz.

Looking to build a new rig in the near future mainly for gaming just wondering the extra £70 for the i7 is worth it?

As for the main board i think im going with the ASUS P8P67 Rev 3

Any help would be appreciated.

Whats the rest of the spec going to be, for most users the 2500K is plenty, all you have to do is read the review we did fella.

Well at the moment it's shaping up as follows:

Core i5 2500k or i7 2600k

Asus P8P67 Rev 3

Corsair HX 750W

Corsair Obsidian 700D

Corsair 8GB Vengeance (Not sure on the RAM yet really)

MSI GTX 570 OC or GTX 560Ti Twin Frozr II

I've been out of the game a fair while so this may be a pile of junk i've got a lot of reading up to do! Mainly wanting to play battlefield 3 on full whack but obviously no specs have been released yet.

And it will be water cooled but not initially.

I already have monitor and dvd drive and anything else i've missed off, bar windows 7.

Again any help would be much appreciated.

That build looks good, the 2500k is more than enough for most things but if you can afford it I would go with the 2600k, if you want to save a bit of money get the 2500k.

As for the graphics card the 570 is more powerful than the 560 obviously, but the 560 is pretty close to it and if you OC it even closer. Plus the 560 uses less power runs cooler and is quieter, also with the 6990 coming out Monday (EDIT: it's Tuesday 8/3/11 not Monday) and the 590 not long after, price drops are bound to happen so i'd hold off for a couple of weeks if you don't mind waiting.

I'd say if it's for just gaming get the i5 2500k save the £70 and put it towards the gpu as the 2500k is perfect for a gaming rig but hey it's your own personal preference as TTL said look at his review for it.

Ahh right thanks for the heads up! I had no idea new releases were so close. Im looking to start buying in parts in around a month or so i think, just figured i'd lay down some ground work so i had a rough idea of what i want.

Always best to do the ground work IMO, less chance of ef'in up when you buy

The prices should have come down buy the time you buy, don't know how much they will drop by though, it's usually worth waiting to see though. Nvidia is bringing out the GTX550 as well so i'm not sure if 560 prices will go down much but the 570 and some AMD cards should drop, it's the way it usually goes when new cards are released anyway.

From what I understand the i5 2500k is best choice for gamers atm, seems to beat every other processor in test scores, and the i7 2600k is a better choice for people who want to do video editing etc as well as gaming and everything else.

So if your build is for gaming and just everyday surfing, typing up documents and things like that then go with the 2500k.

As for graphics cards if your going for the 560 option go for the Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti Super Overclock <- Tom's review

or if you want to go for a 570 save a few more £ or $ and get the 570 Twin Frozr II/OC or Evga SC 570

Thanks for the replies everyone! My course requires some 3d modeling but nothing too strenuous just designing mechanical components such as suspension and the likes so would the i5 be able to handle this with ease? I don't really mind spending the extra money but if it's not necessary then i'd rather not. I just want a rig that will last me a few years of high end gaming and be able to keep up with all my work.

The 2500k will do it but the 2600k will do it faster.

The 2500k will do what you need it to but if you want that bit of extra power to get the job done faster go with the 2600k, if it was just for gaming the 2500k would be more than enough but it's up to you if you want that bit of extra power for the 3D rendering. The GPU will make up the performance in gaming so get the best card you afford at the time you get one.

It's going to be water cooled shortly after building so there isn't really a lot of point in getting the noctua, though if im short of money for the water set-up i may look into it! And as for overclocking as soon as the waters in i'll be having a good play!

I still can't decide whether the 2600k would be overkill for what i need, ive read in places that the hyperthreading sometimes hurts frame-rates during games can anyone elaborate on this?

Mate if your going to be doing 3d modeling as well as a lot of gaming just go for the 2600k, your btr getting something that can handle everything your asking of it. I'm pretty sure hyperthreading makes very little to no difference to your fps in games, but sure you can always go into the bios and turn it off and on if your that worried about it

For gaming; The i7 isn't worth it. I got an i5-750 @ 4Ghz and it's holding up strong. The thing holding back my PC ATM is my 5870. Also, 8GB RAM for gaming is a waste too. 4GB is enough, but a little bit more like 6GB is better so 8GB isn't that bad after all since 6GB for dual channel doesn't work out that good.

Im going with a 2500k, i doubt the extra threads will ever come in handy really, they are both powerfull enough to do whatever i want anyway

I really want to build it now i don't want to wait! haha. But waiting for potential price drops could well be worth it!
