Cant copy Data off my Archived DvD

A couple months ago i decided to clean up my HDD and backed up a bunch of stuff to DvD. I recently did a reinstall of vista (x86) to try and get everything cleaned up a bit more.

Now I'm trying to replace a few of the files I put on DvD but cant for the life of me get them to copy too my HDD. I can get a couple smaller files to copy just fine, but one rather large one just wont budge. Ive tried everything i can think of, including updating the Firmware for the DvD drive itself.

Ive tried ripping the whole DvD to my HDD but that goes as far as 1% and stops. And copying the file directly goes for 10s and stops.

Any help would be appreciated as I would love to be able to get back my files.

Im using vista X86, and a Samsung SH-S182.

Have you tried doing the copy on another computer ?

Also, and I know this sounds pretty obvious, but have you tried cleaning the disc, sometimes this can prevent reading/writing.

I havent tried reading it on another computer yet. I would need to take it too a friends to try, but Ill take it next time I head over if it isnt fixed by then.

I thought it might be dirty, but it was spotless when i looked.

Im able to open the winrar file, which contains all the compressed files. I can even extract the smaller ones using winrar but the large remaining file makes the program "Not Responding". So i guess i can read all the files straight off the dvd except for the one i want.

Alright, so i tried Izarc, and it doesnt work either.

However, i did notice something when using it. It appears that my DvD drive stops spinning after a few seconds into the copy/extract. Now im wondering if there is a setting for my dvd drive that might be causing this, as i know it works in all other aspects ie... installation, movies, burning etc with other disks.

I can still copy off the smaller files no problem, so that leads me to believe the disc itself is fine.

Thanks for the suggestion on Izarc though. Looks like ill be using it in the future, seems like it could be quite usefull.

Have a quick read of this. Ofc the topic of the thread isn't totally to do with ur situation, but therein lies the correct connection details.

Now if u have ur stuff connected according to the above, either the drive, media or ur memory are knackered.

(wasn't the exact link I was after, so I'll just add that u shouldn't connect an IDE device in the middle of the cable, leaving the connector on the end attached to nothing)

Well im gonna have to say that one file of the media must be messed up. I double checked the IDE connection and its fine, I can run everything else off the dvd and still burn, so the drive itself is good. My memory should be fine or I doubt I could run as much as I do with vista no less.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. Time to face the dragon. It was a video I took of my sisters wedding so I'm just hoping someone else in the family still has a copy. :o
