I just reviced this a few days ago for my 16th birthday present :)

Costing me close to 400 quid, But tbh its worth it.

Its a 8.0 megapixel camera, and im using the standard EF-S 18-55 lense kit.

I used my old Ixus 55 to take these shots.

A poor picture... but it was a quick one.

My first picture with it.

my advice for you or anyone going to get a D-SLR.

these are for new comers, basic needs for handling D-SLR

UV filters

C-PL filters

flash

spare batteries for camera/flash

sandisk cards, 4GB or more, i use about 3GB on a day out, from 5am-12midnight.

dust blower

clothe for lens

camera bag

good tripod, good tripod mount (mine cost 150quid for tripod+mount)

you'll regret not getting those

and when ever you have time, play with it as much as you can, use all the settings you can find, learn what your camera can do and remember it, then when it comes to those 'moments' you wont miss it because you dont know what settings was needed.

thats it......photography is time and money consuming......other then that....

good luck!

After seeing this I just had to take my camera back and get an EOS 400D for pics :) Lucky Jossops let me upgrade and pay the extra :D

Ordered a Sandisk Extreme III 2gb CF card and have reserved a nice metal tripod and some UV filters for when I get my new CC through the post (for some reason my chip+pin won't work). I don't think I can afford a spare flash and macro lens right now, but maybe soon :)

After struggling to find anything remotely interesting I took these. 1st with flash, 2nd without (resized for web, obviously)

weihk.... to be honest... i wuddnt want to walk around with all that stuff..

......reason(s)?

heavy? nope, a normal size back pack will be plenty of room if you are only getting a single camera+kit lens bag, where you put your camera together with lens(kit lens, 28-70mm etc etc) in camera bag, put camera bag inside back pack, then using the small compartment to store mem' cards+batteries, then with space in back pack left for flash and couple filters.

if you are serious enough to get D-SLR, then you'll have to fork out for the extra bits for it......otherwise there really isnt any point in getting a D-SLR if you are only doing 'point&shoot'......

ofcourse, everyone can say what i listed really isnt needed for newbie, but then how many 'newbie' stay as 'newbie' forever? after a while when you get used to the camera, you'll find out there are needs for extra equiptment.

but! its all my opinon and little experience......

nice camera tho!

good choice of camera kemp! its a wicked entry camera, would last you a good few years.

Manfrotto tripod?

maybe its new camera you arent used to it......but IMO, first pic DoF too shallow, top half over expose.....

anyway......i hope you guys fall deep down into the world of photography, and wish you never have to sell your a*se just to get that EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM:eek: :D :D :D :D :D :D :p :D :D

That looks an excellent piece of kit :)

I was thinking of getting a better camera, but I only really use my mobile phone camera atm lol :D

Keep hearing good things about Digital SLR's tho

If only I understood half of what you just said my friend...

hmmmm.......

first pic you took with flash, IMO.....DoF (depth of view) too shallow, over expose on top half of the photo(too much flash, made the thing white).

IF(note....IF) i were to take a pic of the same object at same angle, i would pull back, zoom in, slower shutter, take a couple step down on flash, F8 or F11.

thats due to the inbuilt flash tho....otherwise i might just bounce light from a wall or flash board......

just my own views......not intended to have a go......

No wasn't taking it as having a go jus didn't know what you meant.

I can't afford a flash gun (or a macro lense which is what I really want) right now, so I will try stepping down the flash as you suggested. Like I said it's new and shiny so need to get used to it :)

It's only a bog-standard 18-55 lense with it

EDIT: just realised i've stolen OP's thread - sorry mate :(

i have my 10MP camera, and all i carry around with me is batteries, usually 24, because 4 photo's uses 2 AA batteries :(

so whenever i go anywhere with my camera, my pockets buldge lol

that must be painfull......lol

us lucky D-SLR user have their own kind of batteries, they do cost a bit, but each charge last me 500 shots, i think Canon batteries are lower, think the last time i used a 30D it lasted around 250shots.

the only other batteries carried around is the ones used by te flash, mine takes 5AA, last about 200shots, i take 15with me at most, if im out on a wedding session or out with model shots, take the charger out with me if i need to charge, or just buy some from shops.

blah.....taking photos isnt as easy as 1-2-3 eh

Nah, my canon can take up to 500 on a full charge :)

My reasons for not wanting to carry those things around... because... where i live... ill probberly get stabbed having all that stuff. I am gunna buy all the stuff u sed tho. :)

I just invested in some rechargeables, got 8 (as my cam takes 4 at a time) 2700mAh fujicell batts new for £11 posted on Ebay :D frickin steal if you ask me. Argos wanted £15 for 4 of the same capacity.

OOOOOOoooooooooo? never knew Canon XXXD range batteries last that long now.....

i remember from D10,D20,D30 and D2MKII batteries only last for 200-250shots, hmmmmm.....entry level cams are starting to look better and better.

hmmmm......i missed that D2.......lovly bit of kit that was.....
