Can I use ram slot 1/3 instead of 2/4?

Hi,
I built a Skylake PC for my brother few days ago. I had some issues with the ram, as I could not get a signal using both sticks in slot 2/4. Only by using 1 stick did I get a signal.

Then I tried moving both to 1/3 and I got a signal. I then moved both back to 2/4 and still had a signal.

Its been a few days now and I just messed around with OCing (and failed). Now I no longer get a signal using slot 2/4, however 1/3 works fine.

My question is if using slot 1/3 makes a difference over slot 2/4? The reason im asking is because on the motherboard itself and in the manual it says "Always use slot 2/4 first".

I have no idea why slot 2/4 didnt work to begin with, then suddenly worked, and now no longer works after my OCing. Its a mystery to me.

Sounds to me like you have a RAM Slot defect, id personally send the motherboard back for a replacement.

But as far as im aware there is no reason why you cant use 1/3

But 2/4 did work, until I started OCing and did something wrong and had to reset BIOS. Could it be because XMP-profile disabled after it reset? I dont remember what exactly I did to begin with, to make 2/4 work all of a sudden, but I do remember XMP-profile was on.

If using 1/3 doesnt matter despite what mobo and manual says, I doubt hes gonna want to ship it back now with the whole thing running.

Well in the end its up to you. It may be due to user installation error or a hardware fault. I would rather be on the safe side and send it in for repair just in case to get it over and done with.

Though if you would rather not, it wouldnt hurt that much to use 1/3. Does the manual indicate that there is a speed difference if you were to use 1/3 instead of the 2/4 slots?

Its my brothers, not mine. In the manual it says this: http://prntscr.com/85hcn0
On the motherboard it just has arrows at 2/4 and says something like "use these first".

Yes a lot of the asus mobos are set up like that (mine is too) i gess its to leave extra room for a cpu cooler if you are only useing 2 dimms.
Still it student make any difference useing 1/3 slots but it sounds like you ether have bad ram or a fulty dimm slot on the motherboard i'd be sending them back
