Hey guys,

I was curious, I want to join your team (a briiliant reason behind your folding

) and was wondering, I don't have time (or the money

)at the moment to build a dedicated rig to do it and probably won't until the summer. Is it possible that I can use my personal laptop to start folding and how would I go about starting to do it?

I think the work your all doing is amazing and keep it up

Just be careful of overheating, you will lose WU's and of course it's not so good for the laptop itself

having said that, I have 3 laptops folding here and they work just fine.

Be sure to give us the specs of the machine, that way we can make sure it will run as efficient as possible.

I never used a laptop for FAH before never will as mentioned to much heat and its IMHO not worth it,

unless its a i7 then i will make sure it won´t overheat

then it would start FAH ASAP!!!

EDIT LOL nice talking against my own reply

Hey littleben,

Yes you can fold on a laptop, though as it does depend on the spec and you'll need to make sure that you keep it cool as it can overheat.

I've just started folding tonight for Redline on my laptop and it's awesome to be part of the team.

I used to Fold on my P9500 based Core2Duo laptop so you'll be ok. As others have said, keep an eye on temps (Google "Realtemp" for a decent app to monitor it) and try to keep the underside of the laptop well ventilated. I used a tray/cushion under mine.

I'm cheap, I used to use cds on the backside of it to lift it up a bit

I'm the same with being a cheapskate, I've got my laptop on my wash basket (wooden) thats got holes in the top so air can pass through and a few select items propping it up at the back to keep it ventilated.

I think I'll save the trays to put food on, nice idea though

Thanks for all the replys.

I think I'm going to have to invest in a newer laptop or a pc, had a look at the spec of mine and I don't think it'll cope

It is about 6 years old and it'd probably kill the old girl off

I might just keep browsing the forums for a while until I can either afford a newer bit of kit of can do my build in the summer

the fans inside laptops are not meant to be thrashed, and may not last too long.

laptops were designed for people on the go, and do not really have the potential OOMPH for serious gamers or people with folding in mind.

although, if you never leave it unattended, and watch the temps, you should get reward from it!
