Can a gpu kill a monitor ?

I installed a 7950 a few days ago, and all seems good ( fingers crossed I don't like making comments like that, as not to tempt fate ) But yesterday, I paused a game, and when I returned my 2nd monitor was off. So I turned it back on and all was fine. But today, it happened again, but this time I was watching a movie, and it has now completely died.

I have my 32" led tv connected via hdmi, and my 23" Asus monitor connected via dvi. Is there nay chance of the graphics card being responsible ?

The card has got quite a load coil whine issue, and every now and then, it makes a noise, like a squeak, in steps of tone. It is hard to explain what it sounds like, the best way to describe it is, in movies when a computer is doing it's thing, it's the sound they lay on top. Like a generic computer computing. No idea if that makes sense, but it's all I've got. Cheers guys.

Never heard of a graphics card that killed a monitor.
And coil whine has no influence on the performance of a card, it's just annoying.

Possibly a bad hdmi port, could have sent a surge to your LCD. I had that problem with my last sapphire 7870.

No it's a HIS reference mate. Not sure if I explained properly it was the 2nd monitor running through dvi that has gone not the tv through hdmi.

I personally haven't ever heard of a GPU killing a monitor. Sounds like a coincidence to me...

Can you explain further what happened while you were watching the movie? Did the monitor just all of a sudden go black, or were there some visual distortions on the screen before it kicked?

Also, have you been noticing the back of the screen being overly hot, or anything like that? You overclock the panel or anything like that?

I'm curious to see how this turns out, because I have heard of odd cases like this before that we have all just passed as a coincidence.

No , no noticeable heat from it, no, and no overclock. I only use it as a second monitor really for game play , and when moving pages around, so it isn't as if it takes a beating or any thing. One min it was on the next it was off, as simple as that. There was no warning or distortion. It just went off.

This does sound a bit like a coincidence. But as far as I can tell the only way to know for sure is either to send the card in for diagnostics or hook up another monitor and see if it dies as well :o

ive had monitors do this they go into sleep mode and dont wake up its normally the monitor itself thats borked.

i had a monitor what was 6 months old do this lg replaced it next day though give asus a call if your monitor is still in warrenty they should replace it.

the exact issue is the board that controls power to the monitor shorts it can be repaired but cost 99% of the time more than a new monitor would..

Does the monitor get power? (its on but no visual)

If monitor gets Power. Try getting a DVI to HDMI adapter and try and run a single screen monitor setup using the hdmi port...

If by chance the above works, the DVI port on the video card has packed up....
(test it if need be with a hdmi to dvi adapter and try your Tv going through the dvi port.)
........RMA !!!!!

Could be 'worn cables' unlikely I know , but so is a Monitor killing videocard.

If there is no power going to the monitor, its a safe bet your card is fine. It could be a simple thing like replacing the fuse in the plug.

keep us posted......

No, no power mate. not even a standby light. I'll get in touch with Asus today, the monitor is only about 7 months old. This is a strange one.

I thought I would give the monitor one last try, and she came straight on, first time. I spent a good half an hour faffing around last night with fuses, power cables, I even re mounted it back on it's stand of the wall, to no avail. I was lost without a 2nd monitor yesterday, I kept looking towards it, for temps, and the time. Thank god she lives.
