Calling all team members!

A very nice donation to the team, potentially a 100,000+ PPD donation to 98860.

Competition always makes it more exciting and while it still won't prevent the "card grab" person, its more exciting then just picking names at random. The problem I always see is how to make it a fair competition. Some of the brainstorms from this thread.

-Writing a reason why I'm deserving post(not for front page posting)

-Picture of the rig the card will go in.

-Some sort of folding competition(fair to low and high PPD people)

Maybe have 3 seperate competitions for each of the above for example.

The brainstorm I just came up with is something like a folding competition based on luck and skill. Maybe at the beginning of a one week period(say based on the stats from extremeoverclocking folding page) you predict how many points you will fold that week, has to be more then XXXX(say 7,000 for kicks that way someone doesn't just fold one WU)can't go under the number or you're out(that adds some variable to your guess/prediction), closest person to their prediction wins(as a percentage of their prediction). Only draw back I see is highly favors someone that folds on a single GPU, it's very predictable if you get say 8020's all week and you don't use the card for anything but folding, although it's still possible to miss your number by 5750(or whatever points those 8020's are). That's the big drawback I see to that idea, I guess you could require at least a CPU folding but I'm not sure how to prove that(screenshots, just looking at the stats, etc). Definitely harder for those with more clients, I don't know just tossing out an idea that came to me.

this is why i love this forum

Damn, here I am watching the newest TTL video and he calls out Redline and now I feel guilty! I've been slacking on my folding duties gentleman (trying to revive my dead gtx465 for some surround gaming...sorta worked too!

) I wasn't actually allowed to kill our old server at work by folding on it, but I am in the process of putting Ubuntu on my old q6600 rig and leaving it folding at work! Once I get home and finish (read: START) writing this research paper that's due Monday I'll have the 2600k rig up and folding as near 24/7 as I can allow! So Happy folding gents!!!

A few picks of my fun times just cuz I'm a bit bored:

Attempting to troubleshoot the dead card (pre-baking)...Anyone know if a couple 8600GTS's are worth folding with?

good luck guys, you have all been doing a brilliant job. I'm not allowed to fold anymore sadly (giant electricity bill pissed off parents)

If we can win solarpanels or windmills, I'm in!

Aah I was mistaken, I thought it was parts A and B went together.

If that is the case then I have 2 folding servers currently. Barebones 2500k machines solely set up for folding ATM. I have had these running constantly for about 30 days with no down time. Would greatly appreciate the opportunity to fold some more points for OC3D

I would be very interested in getting a 560 Ti in my Dual Quad workstation. So I will be keeping an eye out for the competition. Unfortunatly my imagination doesn't go much further than pulling names out of a hat.

I'm not sure how it could be checked that the card is actually be used for folding, but I think most folders on here would be willing to jump through the odd hoop if need be to prove it's going into and staying in a folding rig.

I would also be intrested in doing a monthly artical. My vocab isn't the greatest but providing I have interent connection when you let us know what sort of sample you would like I'll do my best to get one to you.

As for an influx of noobs. There couldn't be a better place for them to come (IMO). There is almost always someone who can answer a question or give advice within a short while of a question or request comming in.

Edit:

Just checked out your subscribers vid where you mention the graphics cards give away. You are soo right about people over specing their power supplies.

Well, I personally have a server that could take a card, 2500k should not need 850w alone. got to say that the initiative is awesome, and people recieving the cards should be ashamed if they even think about selling em. Atm my normal Rig can't fold my GPU as 680's doesn't recieve good WU's, mine never progresses. (so in theory i could take more but I'm not greedy...) an idea is to get the winners to send a picture of the rigs after a month, and make them stand out, for instance write "Redline Folding GPU" on the cards. Anyway Awesome Initiative. As for writing an article, I'm not exactly a writer:(

This is just my own personal feeling, is there a way to figure out how long people have been folding for?

What we could do is have a competition where people fold for a period of say, a week, in that time, people make reports of their PPD

From there, figure out the ratio, people with higher folding times but lower scores (in my opinion) deserve the cards, so offer to them first, if they don't want it, keep going down the list until they are all gone.

This way it will go to the people who will use them for what you want it used for

I was thinking that having the cards stay the "property" of OC3D - but have it be a lend out by lottery system; So you would have a drawing every 6 months consisting of everyone who wanted to put their name in a hat (ie they have space/power/means to utilize the cards - and want to); Then you draw the name out of a hat (good idea from previous post - makes it random) and the winner folds for 6 months; Then another drawing Biannually and the cards get passed around from winner to winner; Eventually down the road they will get lost, broken, stolen or forgotten - but it'll be after a good run of drawings and extra PPD for the team.

I think it would be best to give the cards to someone, who has a 24/7 folding rig with free PCI-E banks. That way they would give most points.

Hi all,

I don't have really good suggestions of how to fairly distribute the hardware, but I do want give a huge THANK YOU to ttl for his continuned support and promotion of Redline @ OC3D.

We luv ya guy!!!

competition to promote the team and how you could to a giveaway

ive always had an idea of doing a giveaway on my team but never had the funds to do it. you are more than welcome use my competition idea for a giveaway, ive tried to make it as fair as possible to inspire new folder and to reward the old folder as well as a way to keep them folding (and in a nice way get them addicted to it lol)so they can make a good contribution to the team.

competition

to enter the competition get ever one to sigh there form name and there folding name down in a thread on the forums and weather you new or old folder .

folding competition is 1 month long ( or however long you want it )

everyone get and entry into the competition once they make 10k points and they can get another entry for every 10k thereafter but must contributed points in each week on the 1 month competition otherwise they get disqualified and you just pick another name out of the hat. you can check ever entry on this competition on EOC to see if they qualify for the prize

you can point people towards EOC to monitor their folding to keep them up to date with the stats. http://folding.extre....php?s=&t=98860

does not have to be 10k could be up or down and the old folder could get an extra entry for ever 100k they done before the cut off point for being and class as an old folder maybe a month or to before the competition start, up to you on that bit on not to sure.

you could also do another competition at the same time with similar rule to get people to contribute more. at the end of the month ever person with over 500k point get an entry and thereafter for every 500k into another prize draw to win maybe a better prize.

rule.

must have entered forum name and folding name down in the thread to be able to enter.

one enter for every 10k point done over the month.

must of contributed points in each week on the 1 month competition .

for the front page idea you could do folder of the month about what started them what there folding on now what ppd there getting, could also do something along the line of what folding@evga are doing http://www.evga.com/...m.aspx?m=658121

too tom

i was inspired to start fold by a person on youtube who did a few videos. doing a video is great way to promote it not many people have done it witch is a shame. this is the person who inspired me AtlasFolder

This may "ruffle a few feathers" but, at the end of the day, it's only my opinion
biggrin.png
and really counts for nothing.

I think the idea of a competition although very good, would seem to be a very time consuming and complicated business.

I personally think Tom should just pick who he thinks should have the cards, because at the end of the day they are his to donate and are going to help a very worthwhile cause no matter who gets them.

Ive actually been speaking to Stevehat1 - aka #1 folder for the team and he is deffo getting at least one of the cards. Ive got my eye on a couple others as well.

As I said all along it was just an idea and it doesnt seem that people within the team have the time to be able to manage such a competitin and sadly at this moment in time I dont really either.

But we will see how it pans out because I need to talk to the yankysheep anyways

I used to fold a few year ago and just started back up again for 98860 Its like TTL said everyone has there own reason for folding and I have mine. I was shocked at some of the points some of the 98860 had got, I don't think I will ever catch up to them.

I think IsaacjDean is right it would be good if they went to someone who gets the points and do it 24/7 it's them who deserve it and should be proud of them self's. I'm proud to be in such a good team and will leave my spare computers on and do my bit to help.
