CAD rig

I'm looking at putting together a new pc so I can run Autocad 2D/3D software

Already chosen the BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Cube Case in blue.

Budget is around £500-£700

Two things I'm trying decide on is

1.) AMD or Intel
2.) brand new or 2nd hand parts i.e. graphics card, motherboard from ebay?

For a Cad build i would definitely go Intel, stronger threads will benefit you more than more threads from what I have experienced. Do you plan on overclocking or running everything at stock?

As for second hand parts, most of my rig is made from previously used components, just be sure to look into your sellers beforehand to minimize risk.

I'll make you up a build on http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/ to use as a brief guide, I'll post it up in a few.

Also do you need an optical drive, OS or monitor?

Here is what I have came up with (Link), priced at about £610 without an optical drive and a OS.

This assumes you will be overclocking the CPU, and the GPU is a decent gamer too (as you mentioned gaming in your intro post).

If you don't want to overclock go for a non-K i5 4670 and a H87 motherboard, this will save you a few quid.

AMD is really not worth it for cpu intensive stuff. maybe pick up a xeon? Can't remember the name but maybe one that is basically a 3770 but cheaper.

E3 1230 v2 is the Ivy Bridge one, V3 is the newer Haswell equivalent to the i7 4770, minus the on-board graphics and for the price of an i5.

+1 If you are getting a GPU and trying to save money its a no brainer to get a xeon.

If you get a cheap motherboard, a xeon 1230, 1600Mhz ram, more the better, SSD and any graphics card, the quadro and firepro cards are pointless tbh. Just get a 570 or 7870. If you can afford it get a 580/670 or a 7970.

Thanks for the prompt reply's guys much appreciated

Watsyerproblem - thanks for specifying a rig for me :) great site BTW :)

also dose the System build site cross check the components selected to make sure they are compatible with each other?

been thinking of having 3 SSD's one for windows, the second for programs and the third for my CAD work and photo's so I can easily remove it and take it with me to work or meetings if needed.

id just get a cheap portable passport device for your models to take to and from £40 for a 500gb then if you have simulations going on there, then you have ample space
