Cable Lacing Guide

Hi guys, recently alpenwasser showed us the beauty of cable lacing, and with his permission, I decided to write a simple guide to lace your own cables, with the correct tools this is quite a straightforward process and will make your rig look more professional than ever, at least in my eyes, it looks like a hundred times better than plain old boring cable ties.

Alpenwasser did a very informative guide on lacing double layered cables, which technique can be used for any amount of rows you have, in this video, he showed us how to lace a double layered cable with eight rows, and using the same technique I managed to lace one with just two rows.

The tools/materials needed to lace your cables are :

  • Waxed cotton lacing (any colour) with 1mm width (thicker for a more industrial look)
  • Paperclip (not essential but it will make your life easier)
  • Scissors
  • Cable for lacing

Here is alpenwasser's video tutorial :

You might have single layered cables which cannot be laced using the same technique as the one used when lacing double layered cables. So here is a step-by-step guide on how to lace a single layered cable. For the sake of this guide, I will be using 2mm thick red lacing as it will be easier to follow and well, it just looks sexy on black sleeved cables.

Note: You will be working from the bottom side, so please make sure that the side that will be shown off is facing downwards.

To start of with, tie one end of the cotton lace to a paperclip (you can do both but it's not really important) and prepare your other materials.

First step is to wrap the lacing around all the wires once, so that no lacing overlap each other. Leave about 1 inch of extra lacing so you will be able to tie a knot later on.

And go over again, but this time go between the last two cables, in this case, between cables 3 and 4.

IMG_0008_zps0c3d8b31.jpg

Then go back up between cables 3 and 4 from the bottom side, as shown in the picture below.

IMG_0009_zps2b7d98c8.jpg

Then cross over to the top side between cables 2 and 3.

IMG_0010_zps46958617.jpg

And go back up from the bottom side of cables 2 and 3 .

IMG_0011_zpsf060f3d0.jpg

Then cross over again and go in on the top side between cables 1 and 2. (note there is a pattern and you can follow it no matter how many cables you have).

IMG_0012_zps8b1beea2.jpg

Then come out again on the bottom side of cables 1 and 2, and you should be left with something like this.

IMG_0013_zps8d18048b.jpg

Then tie a knot with the extra piece you left at the beginning. I did just a single knot for the sake of looking better as the lacing is a bit thick but with thinner lacing, you could do a double knot for the lacing to be more secure, although it's not going anywhere.

Then finally trim off the excess lacing and voila, you laced your first set of cables.

This is how the front should look like if done correctly.

And a final shot of the whole cable, now obviously you don't have to do it three times on this short length of testing but I was still experimenting with it and the third one was done for the sake of this guide.

Please leave any feedback, criticism and/or questions in the comments below. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Props to alpenwasser

Nicely done, sir!

I actually temporarily had something similar for the SATA cables in ZEUS, but since I
didn't need to lace those I didn't finish the technique and just saved it for HELIOS. I
never got around to figuring out how to best make the knot at the end, and must say I
very much like this version.

Also, very nice post with emphasizing the important bits from my vid. :)

Nice guide mate, TBH, I'd not even known what Cable Lacing was till this guide, must have missed it in alpenwasser's build (I must run over to those threads to give the pics a closer inspection), ta!

Well, I never heard of it before alpenwasser's guide so we are kind of in the same boat here.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, I really appreciate your comments.

Great Cable Lacing Tutorial alpenwasser, ill be trying this and ill post a thread showing my work. Wish me luck LOL

Back from having a look at Zeus. :D

LOL, you know what I'd noticed it but thought that was actually how it'd been cable braided?

Thanks for the guide mate, something definitely for the builds! Thanks to alpenwasser too!

Let me head back over and drool some more!

Haha, no worries. I started looking into it a few months ago but didn't know what it
was called, so I started searching for "sewing cables". Via a few detours I finally
found out that it was actually called cable lacing, which then sent me on a vast
journey through the depths of the interwebz to look for more info about this ancient
art. After finding a few things here and there (NASA has a nice instruction manual
on lacing) I then took what I'd learned and worked out this technique.

The trick was how to make if free-floating. A very similar technique is used to tie
cable bundles to what looks like small ladders, but of course I don't have the
structural support of that in my PC case unless I build little ladders everywhere
(which would just look ridiculous  ).

So I had to figure out how to get the same look, but without the structural support
by solid tie down points.

If you wish I think it would be ok to post your work here. We could make this sort of
the OC3D cable lacing thread where we show off each other's work. Just a thought. ;)

Na, that was all me.
Originally all the wires were unsleeved and naked.

Happy to help, and go right ahead. :)

Nice find and thanks for sharing again!

Yeah, as i said I thought the cable braiding looked very good, just didn't know it had the cable lacing in it too, thought the braiding was like that.

Good work man!

I think that's a great idea. I'm going to try start lacing on the weekend and ill show what i have done.

Love the positive feedback from you guys, I ordered some blue lacing for my personal rig and I will post some pictures here once it gets here. I think alpenwasser already thanked most of you so I will not reply to everyone, but I read all of them and I still appreciate it :)

Laced my main rig today, this is a before:

And here is the after, I'm not totally happy with them especially with the pci power cables but I will get them fixed eventually. I just got a job in IT and I need to settle down before doing some more work, started on Monday :P

Oh, that was already pretty tidy before. :)

About the PCI-E cables: You could try lacing them in one package of 14 wires to get it
into a more ordered state, that's what I do. Makes for one clean flat bundle.

And congratz on the job!

Yep I know it was pretty clean and I must admit I was pretty happy about it, but I think you'll understand me for wanting to change something, in fact, I needed to change something lol. I can't believe the pci idea didn't come to me before, I guess I was in a hurry to do them I skipped the thinking part haha, but anyways thanks for the heads up :)

Oh yes, I know that instinct. Despite still not being done with HELIOS my fingers are
already itching for changing things on other rigs in my household

Ah well, sometimes the obvious escapes one. I've had it happen countless times,
most crucially in university exams :o
