Buying oc packages.

Hi,This is my first post here on these forums but i hope someone can advise me.

I do not know alot about oc'ing but i have built alot of systems for friends and also as a job for 3yrs. (installation tech at a depot)

I have been looking at updating my ageing alienware system which is now 3yrs old.

I had recently read alot about the new tech out now like triple channel memory controllers and i7 procs and had thought about buying something along these lines.

Now why i am putting this post here is i was looking at buying a pre-overclocked mobo package from someone like overclockers.co.uk

Like this ONE

I would like someone with previous experiance in overclocking to possably help me in judging how long the system will last ect

Will the oc'ing drasticly reduce the life of my system.

Are these type of packages recommended ?

I thankyou for your time and sorry if i have posted this thread in the wrong section.

Best way to judge packages like this is to itemize all the things in the package and see what the difference is to the bundle.

The ofc being the cash ur paying them to set the bios up for an oc... which ofc OC3D forums would assist u to do urself anyway.

At the end of the day, they ship this pre-clocked for u to install in a case urself with a psu etc. U do most of the work here. If u bought a case at the same time with psu and drives, and there was no extra charge - I'd consider suggesting it, but I feel another £30/50 would be introduced.

Anywho, the i7 is worrying me atm. I'm up in the air about it's future in the same way Intel's X48/X38 variants are limited. BUT in the case of the i7, the i5 is a different socket, so I'm led to believe, so there's no inter-changing.

For a gamer, right now, i7 or i5 ?

Tbh with all that hot kit you will 100% need a new case, as the alienware stuff will turn in to an oven and cook the parts LOL

Id work out what the normal price of the parts is and judge it against pre overclocked, but remember this, the RE2 and I7 are both very hot so will need a case with good airflow or water cooling.

Is it just me that thinks thats one hellva good deal for that bundle and what you get Im not actually seriously tempted to grab one after all the board and cpu are worth more than the bundle me thinks.

Hmm edit, its the matx board still not bad value though tbh.

I too was worried about the small matx formfactor when comming to overclocking i would think a larger area which to be cooled and where heat is not confined would be better.

Yeah i was gonna put it in a new case but as i was gonna pour all of the money i have into the package +latest pcie ati card that leaves less money for alot of cooling options and s****y cases.

I have since decided to go with a atx formfactor from oc.co.uk for the same price but oc'ed to 4GHz

Code:
h**ps://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-003-OB

The mobo is alot bigger being the atx formfactor and offers alot more expansion like 3way sli.

Along with that a Antec 902 gaming case

Are you saying that standard cooling that comes with the package is only just gonna cut it ?

I had priced up the componants and i would save money but not alot of it,Being a gamer i would like this setup to last awhile before i had to update it again (mobo, cpu, ram wise)

Thanks for your replies so far.

*edit*

700watt psu should run this mobo package ok ?

Adding a XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 Black Edition 1GB GDDR5 PCIe ?

*edit2*

just seen the board that the package uses in the url i posted in this post has a review right here on this website :P

Code:

Right dude @ 4ghz you need serious cooling, you also need to make sure the nubs @ ocuk havnt volted the shizzle out of it just to get it there.

So maybe a better option to get a water cooling solution for it then if i buy ?

I have seen if i price up the componants seperatly and put a better cooler on it would ab about the same price

I guess though for todays gaming the standard cpu would do untill i could sort out a better colling solution ready for overclocking ?

Im looking at this little lot.

Apparently from the reviews im looking at including from this website i can easily get alot more power from this setup.

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 Black Edition 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card -

Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (

Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel

Noctua NH-C12P Top-Down CPU Heatpipe Heatsink with NF-P12 Fan

Acousti Ultra-Soft Arrowhead Fan Mounts - 8 Pack

£848.15 inc VAT

That doesn't look like a bad deal at all, but please be aware that the aircooler will probably give up after ~3.5gHz or even earlier.

Water is a good option (although not in the 902), but remember it costs an additional 200 for just the CPU loop.

I did see a water cooling solution for under 200 for the radiator, cpu block and an additional gfx card block if i needed one but as i have no knowledge as fitting water cooling im a little off about getting it done.

I guess ill stick with stock cooling untill i can read up more about water cooling.

Thanks for your help
