Buying GTX vs R9

Okay guys aint been on here a while as ive been working 24/7 to save for my upcoming pc upgrade and its a big one :)

Im stuck as to which will give me the best to the point of where there's diminishing returns all these cards are going to be hybrid cooled with a nzxt g10 and an aio cooler haven't decided which brand or model yet.

Now heres my conundrum my next setup im going to buy 3 x 2560x1440 monitors to run in portrait as the lines haven't bothered me in a past eyeinifinty setup i had with 3 different monitors so 3 identical ones can only get better :D this is gonna take some graphics horse power as i like my max detail for visuals i don't normally use aa as i cant notice it.

Given this which graphics setup would you go with?
2x Gtx 780ti's
2x Gtx 780's
2x R9 290X's
2x R9 290's
I dont know when nvidia will release its top maxwell card but if its not more than 15-20% better than these configurations then im not to bothered.

Power Consumption i cant see them sucking down more power than my gtx 480 sli :) setup.

I am not going to answer your question, there will be plenty of posters along in a bit who will do that.

I think the first thing you should look at before upgrading your GPUs is to upgrade your CPU and platform. Normally I would say that X58 has plenty of life left in it but on this occassion taking into account the GPU hardware and resolution you intend to use I think you should seriously consider an i7 4770k haswell system. This will give better efficiency, higher CPU overclocks and PCI-E 3.0 which comes into its own at ultra high resolutions. You will also be able to add a third card at a later date if you choose the right motherboard.

kaap knows whats his on about and i agree your pushing high res and over 3 monitors, you dont want to bottleneck to early or you will just feel like you have wasted your very very hard earned cash.

id probs look into 4gb cards if your going to SLI, but thats just me and do you have a colour scheme going or anything or just 2 of the biggest ball's cards you can have?

I think you need PCI-E 3.0 to run 2x 290X as well, they don't use crossfire bridges anymore and I think only PCI-E 3.0 is capable of running two cards without a bridge.

Nope do you think AMD would cut out all of there FX chips? currently only amd kaveri APU's are PCIE 3.0 compatable.

Hey guys thanks for the replys I'm doing a whole new system from scratch that's another subject once I've saved the amount I intend to invest into a new system. It's another subject for the CPU section as I'm debating between the i7 4770k or fx 8350 purely for the reason of amd controlling the consoles and potentially the gaming market and the CPU optimisation that could happen later down the line.

I was comparing scores of the gpu's on 3d mark to see how much the cpu's limited the gpu's the fx 8350 is roughly 1500-2000 gpu score behind the i7 4770k but then when you look at game graphs there ain't that many out there that have 2 high end gpu's on a fx 8350 so I can't see how much of a bottleneck there is if there is one.

Thanks for the reply Im going with a white/black & a hint of blue but the cards will have aftermarket coolers on them so the coolers ain't an issue but backplates would be a nice bonus although I would like to try and avoid led's I'm a fan of Tom's pc builds they are calm and collected not rushed bold and in your face :P

Thats because they are only built for reviews and then stripped again after!

If you can afford a 780 Ti then buy them. End of discussion.

Your rig will be ok with those but it wouldt be a bad idea to think about spending money on the rest. 4770K a decent Z87 with a good layout for dual GPU's and some 2400mhz memory would be brilliant. Team that all up with a H100i and an RM850 youll be sorted

i think all that tom missed to say at the end was badda bing badda boom lol,

And if you like the clean look then thats all cool, but yeah as Tom said ATM the 780ti's will be your best choice, and even better once they go under water :)

They maybe put together just for reviews but i can see that you go a little out of your way to tidy things for presentation and i for one very much appreciate it and every thing you do.

I do intend to spend some money as my shopping list is just under £2,500 for just the tower  . Got a couple more pay checks to put aside then im gonna have one massive part's list :D

Thanks for your replys guy's they are very much appreciated.
