Buy or not?

Hello everyone,

So I’m having a bit of decision difficulty, I just found out that at one retailer they have the 5600X in stock for around $400.

I’m currently rocking an 3700X with an ASUS ROG X470-I GAMING motherboard.

Would you say or yourself actually buy the 5600X or just stick with my current setup?

I’m aware that the 5600X gets at max around 30 fps more, not sure off the top of my head if it’s it 1440p or 1080p, considering I’m an 1440p user.

But it’s also faster in Photoshop, now not sure how much benchmarks actually reflects in real world usage of the program - over my 3700X.

Is it worth buying it or sticking with what I have an wait untill next year with Zen 4 and AM5 etc?... This is of course if my 3700X doesn’t decide to die on me, then it’s a different story.

Just wanted to get your thoughts on this, seeing as it’s very often easy to get those ”want it” thoughts, but is it worth it though?...

Right off the bat, I wouldn't worry about CPU deaths, at all. Unless you're running really high voltage, pretty much any other component is more prone to failure.


As for 5600X upgrade - have you found your current CPU inadequate? You'd see some benefit in gaming, but that also depends on your graphics card and refresh rate. If there's a 30fps gain, will you notice going from 90fps to 120? Also, what do you do in Photoshop which requires big performance? I haven't had performance issues there since Haswell, pretty much. Sure, there are measurable gains, but when have you ever had to sit and wait for filter to process or similar?

Personally Dawelio I'd wait for the next gen stuff to come out AM4 is end of life now so not really worth it if you were coming from an old Bulldozer or something then I'd say yeah

I have an Gigabyte RTX 2080 Windforce III and game at 1440p @ 144Hz. And agreed, have decided that those max 30 fps gains aren’t worth $400. And it’s not like I need a new GPU, not that you can actually buy one today anyway :lol:

Plus as you say, I wouldn’t see any of the performance gains overall. The only thing I notice in Photoshop is when loading up a file into Photoshop, but that’s it and the 5600X would hardly improve that - perhaps a faster NVMe drive could potentially speed up that process, but that’s such a minor thing though that it’s pointless.

Yeah, I kinda feel the same. Would be wasting and throwing money at an dying chipset at this point.

Wait for Zen 4 AM5 DDR5 it's really not worth the short term gain, they will have zen 3+ later in the year but i'd still wait it's not so far away and you have a good cpu it's not holding you back tbh.

I'm still on ryzen 1700 @4ghz so when i get the upgrade i should see a massive boost but it's suprising how well my 6800XT does on this somewhat dated cpu it really does well but it does best when things are the most demanding then it's not far behind what someone would get on newer chip.

I invested in some more nvme storage things like that keep my itch ticking over it's a good thing i'm not rich as i'd literally build a supercomputer just for the hell of it lol
