Bulldozer Questions

yeah i was going to ask if anyone knew if the MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) would do ivy. msi support dint seam to know much just typed in his computer search n said it doesn't say. hate call centers that don't know anything of products. im no expert but i knew more then him he said ther is no cpu coming called ivy core, yesh. msi support mad me seriously reconsider msi now. maybe i should get the ASRock Z68 PROFESSIONAL GEN3 instead, herd extreme version kicks ass and pro version is upgraded version of the extreme.

what about the asus p67 sabertooth??? is that good

edit what dose ivy core do anyways???

P67 won't be gen 3 AFAIK, you'll want a Z68 board. IB will be a little faster clock for clock than SB, has PCIe 3.0 and native USB 3.0. Should also use less power and have a lower TDP.

not many choices in brands in gen3 boards, asrock, asus, and msi. the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 is a mini board and seams a waist in a full sized tower. im thinking the ASRock Z68 PROFESSIONAL GEN3 or the MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3). also the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 only has 2 sata iii poorts. and i need at least 4.

edit: asrock gurntees ther boards will be ivy ready via a quick switch

The Gene-Z is a mikro atx board, not a mini itx. Its a very nice MB and i am using it myself on my lan rig. Asus have the pro, gene-z and the deluxe in Gen3. All of them suports the 22nm Ivy Bridge cpu's.

If you only going to use your disks in non raid mode, the sata 2 bandwith is enough. And even with 2 disks in Raid0 the sata2 is enough(300mps). If you are planing on using 4 disks in raid0 then u might need sata3 or a dedicated raid controller card. So if you thinking that using one hdd in a sata3 port might increase speed, you are wrong. Basically you use a sata3 SSD with 300+ read and write in a sata3 port to fully use the bandwith it provides.

The asrock MB's is not good at overclocking and there are also many who reports that they are bad quality overall. Id stick to Asus, gigabyte or MSI.

the reason i want 4 sata iii ports is for storage. just to run 4 3tb storage drives for things mike torrents media creations ect. the MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) seams best via recommendations and features i need. reason i liked asrock had 6 sata ii port wich i could used the 2 intel ones for intel smart response technology

Are you doing Raid0 or not?

not raid no. just 4 single 1 tb drives will 3tb drives work on sata ii??? if so id get the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 with a ocz revodrive hybrid FOR BOOT

Yeah ofcource they will work on sataII. Sata2 & sata3 is about bandwith and not about the storage size of the harddrives. You would only need sata3 if you did 4 normal hdd's in raid0...

So 2x sata3 ports is enough for most people. Normally we use them for one or two(raid0) SSD's (6Gb/s).

so a ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 with a ocz revodrive hybrid boot drive will alow me 12tb of storage??? with single dual slot card like a radeon 6990 or gtx 590 with a Hauppauge Colossus Capture Card. making a multi purpus gaming and multi media machine

edit, i just dont understand why ther are no sata ii 3 tb drives if sata iii drives work in sata ii

You have to be careful with the Revodrive as it's a PCIE card. If you were to get a dual slot video card, it's going to be very cramped on the Gene-Z. It may interest you to plan for a regular 2.5 inch SSD rather than the Revodrive counterpart. For your requirements on what you expect from your new system, a GTX 590 won't be necessary. A single GTX 570 or 580 would be more than sufficient.

3TB drives were released around the time that the SATA 3 standard was in effect. Naturally manufactures would use the produce 3TB drives based on the SATA 3 standard as it's backwards compatible with SATA 2. It just means that when you use a 3TB SATA 3 hard drive on a SATA 2 motherboard or connection, then it's overall performance will be limited to SATA 2 specifications. So you have nothing to worry about, especially if you're using it as storage.

my evga p55 ftw 200 has 2 gtx 280's in sli in top 4 slots. i know spacing them is better but my mobo layout prevent it. im thinking ill transfer my existing ram and gpus to to new system. 2 sticks of adata and not sure on other ill look one day but gives me 4gb. i was thinking a corsair force 3 120gb ssd for boot and eventually upgrading ram and gpus to to a crossfire solution. my nvidia cards give bad stability issues with video divers. cold be mother bord or the fact my brother overclocked the hell out them in his beta testing for nvidia. i want switch to my radeon roots. i have a 22" samsung 3d sync master but my dream monitor is the SAMSUNG MD230X3. love a single card to power them but thinking that big a cross fire set up be wise right. but which radion hd in crossfire be enough.

OK, lets assume that you're looking at the Gene-Z as your 1155 board. A Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD will do nicely as your OS hard drive. 4GB DDR3 memory carried over from your 1156 system shouldn't be a problem at all. If you're looking to the future, a 2x4GB memory kit will do nicely.

If you're going to be doing a lot of photo/video conversions an i7 2600K would be a great investment for you. Otherwise an i5 2500K will be great for all purposes and for gaming as well.

Onto the GPUs. When you're looking at XFire, you'll be looking for something you'll have good use for and not something that's totally going to be overwhelming for the things you're planning to do with the new system. Currently, a single 6970 should be more than enough for a single monitor at 1080P resolution. I would suggest spending a bit more for a GTX 570 as it's on par with the 6970 and better. It also runs much quieter and cooler than a 6970, so that's a big advantage for everyone. You'll be able to use the TV capture card of your choice as it's a PCIE x1 card. The Gene-Z has a PCIE x4 where the TV capture card can be installed.

For a very decent XFire setup, I think 6870s are a good choice. But, I would suggest waiting for AMD and nVidia to release their next generation line up of video cards to decide if and when you want to try XFire.

When you have a number of hard drives and a high performing video card like a 6970 or the GTX 570, I'd suggest looking at a good 750W power supply. The Corsair AX750 is a nice unit to look into.

here is what im looking at currently. i want to do eyefinity one day that's why i had wondered about crossfire. im going to wait for next gen gpus and reuse my sli 280's for now. i have a silverstone st1500 psu and only reason i have corsair in list is because it can run 6 pcie power cables. i seen some cards that take dual 8pins and a 6 pin on a single card. part 1 shows the main parts i need. part 2 shows things i want down the road. for a mild gamer is 2 cards to much or since i want do surround should in i defiantly run cards for increased screen size.
