Building Quad Core Intel Machine, Help Appreciated

ok, thats a start hehe. bearing in mind i have a budget of 100 - 170 ish for a motherboard, what boards can you reccomend me? and also, ive heard things about jmicron IDE controllers so anything that doesnt involve them is fair game.

So far you have been great help, this will probably be my last question about motherboards, as im sure you are tired of me waffling on with nearly no clue.

Aye it does look a good board, im assuming your running a large overclock on it, im planning on running it with a Q6600, ahve you had to add any extra cooling hardware to it?

Also do you know if the IDE controller is Jmicron? it appears to be on a lot of Abit boards but i cant find out about the ip35 pro

Nvidia boards = for people who didn't know what they were doing (cough me) and for people with a lot of money who need SLI.

Thats about it really. Very hot, bad overclocking.

The controller is JMicron but that makes no difference tbh, certainly hasn't for me

Not added any cooling hardware to it and have been running it at high speeds on and off :)

Ah i feel you may have been lucky then, as I know lots of people who have had serious instability problems with Jmicron Controllers.

I think ill take your word for it, and as im hoping i wont have to use IDE at all (unless i run out of money for new drives) so it should be too much of a problem.

So running Version of Rig so far

Abit Ip35 Pro

C2Q Q6600 G0 SlACR

Arctic Cooling freezer pro (or a Thermaltake DuOrb if it turns out to be any good/ released any time soon)

Some 8800 GT (little help here please) with a Thermalright HR-03-GT Cooler + 90mm Fan (as ive heard they run fairly hot, and although not bad for the chip itself, lifts the rest of the cases temperature)

4gb OCZ reaper ram

Corsair 620 Watt Modular PSU (already have this)

Thermaltake Armor w/ 25cm side fan (already have)

samsung spinpoint hdd 500gb

Oem Sata DVD rw of some kind

Creative X-Fi of some kind (unless someone can find me better, or persuade me onboard will be fine)

Creative Inspire T7900 7.1 Speakers

Logitech G15 (already have)

NEC wgx2 20 inch screen (already have)

NEC 175VXM+ 17 inch secondary screen (already have)

suggest and change what you think i would be better with :)

well if your looking for an 8800gt i would suggest the XFX 8800gt(the base one,not the alpha dog)as they own tbh(mine is clocked just as high as an alpha dog but was cheaper).I know some people say they run very hot but if you have good airflow in your case they are not a problem even with standard cooling as mine has never gone past 60 c

just my 2p's worth

For the CPU? do you have any suggestions? im running an AMD version of the arctic freezer pro and its a damn good cooler. i was jsut basing it on that. ive thought about liquid cooling but its a bit out of my range. any suggestions on this as well?

also any ideas on a good 8800 gt? i was looking at an XFX overclocked one.

sorry hadnt seen your post when i made my last post, ill take that into account, im pretty keen on the extra cooling however.

right im finally thinking about buying this setup, any final pointers i should follow?

Also on some last minute researching the "Asus P5K Premium Wifi-AP" has come to my attention, ive heard its a better overclocker than the Abit Ip35 Pro, Can anyone confirm this?

I wouldn`t say it was better. It`s a very capable and widely respected board for sure.

But out of personal preference, I`d continue the theme of IP35pro & Q6600 producing awesome results.

Ive Decided this is never going to be solved, so im going to take the plunge and get the Asus board, as in most benchmarks ive seen it comes out on top, and also i have a friend who has had a serious problem with 2 abit boards in the past.

one other question, Ram... how important is latency? im looking at two sets of ram, ten pound price difference for the only difference in spec being one has latency of 5-5-5-18 and the other has 4-4-4-12 the second one being more expensive. Any pointers? im hoping to post the order tonight.

a rough list of parts im ordering.

Right i have bought it, the parts should be arriving this week and ill get it built and running, i decided against buying a new graphics card just yet so itll be the same setup as listed above but with an ATI X1950 Pro in it. ill upgrade it when it starts to annoy me (probably quite soon when i have more money available)

Ill post pictures soon
