Building a new pc, advice

In short pretty much but as I have stated the SB are actually on par with the older IB for 99% of general workload. If you ever edit photos or videos it would be about 2x as fast also so you are not loosing performance even now.

You can also overclock higher allot easier which has to be a plus with more fun to play around.

This is also why I suggested the cheaper SB core because yes you could sell it and by IB as soon as they are out for the similar 3930k then which would really shine in the next performance step and if you compared the SB and IB of the two socket types there would be no reason to run the 1155 IB's then.

Yes RAM can be upgraded for a long time and you should not be an issue with the 2011. You can just add another 4 chips or replace all once price drops again in the future.

Yeah the SLI may not be needed now but I would never say never. I also often upgrade a single card before going multiple but this gives the option to get the best out of two should I ever feel like taking the next step for further power or if you start editing/rendering allot of large files.

Kind Regards,

Adam

hmm pro's and con's to consider it seems.

Im unlikely to bother buying the IB 2011 as once its built ill be happy with whatever so i dont know if its better to get the older socket IB now or stick with a 2011 SB...

As said no reason to not go with the SB 2011. It performs as good as the top model IB 1155. It overclocks better and has the other pros mentioned. With being the same cost well £20 in it there are no negatives I am aware of.

yea i get your point, considering lowering the mobo budget and going for the 6 core SB 2011 though!

any idea which board would be best for that budget partition?

something like this?

Yep. My personal choice would be this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-091-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2174

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-488-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2174

I didn't suggest the 3930k because of the extra £220 that it represents but if you never feel that you would upgrade to the IB version in the next year or so and you can afford the extra £120 off the bat from downgrading the mobo then fair play.

Adam

yea graphics card is all i upgrade on a yearly basis really.

As asrock a serious brand? wall their fatal1ty rubbish put me off them but they board do look cool. might just go with the trusty asus!

You are correct that Asrock are certainly hit and miss but from all accounts and the time I have used the Extreme series X79 boards they seem to be well made with great OC potential far beyond that of the Gigabyte one which actually isn't quite there compared to the other two.

If you are set at not wanting to risk Asrock then I would go for the Asus. That series is a trimmed down version of the Rampage and has some good legacy support should you require it for any reason.

thanks ill look through them and make a decision, i think the better processor and lesser mobo will be the best move assuming im not replacing anything for 3 years really!

Yep if that is the long term plan then that would be my option also.

Hope this has helped and it all makes sense.

it has helped a lot im finally up to date again with an idea of what im doing! sorry it took so long to get through it all!

Nah,

All is good with the time. Need to get it right with what you want and where you want to go. Plus it made me double check all the details of what I have used. Made sure I hadn't missed anything that you could change to save money, improve performance or worth considering upgrading slightly for the extra cost.

You already have your plan for the graphics card and with what you already have this setup will certainly bring the best out of it.

Personally, I disagree with going quad core 2011.

The 3820 has no benefits over the 3770K at all and will cost more to buy. A 3770K and a £100-150 mobo is all you need and will only set you back ~£350.

You don't need more than 32GB of RAM for the foreseeable future, you don't need more than 16 PCIE3 lanes unless you are planning on going for 3 GPUs or more. Meanwhile the 3770K is more power efficient, has a better memory controller and performs just as well as an overclocked 3820.
