Building a new pc, advice

Hey guys

I am building a new PC and buying parts up to xmas.

I was wondering what you guys would suggest in terms of components focusing on:

Gaming primarily
Media recording and editing
General usage

The PC i have at the moment is very good still (i7 920, Asus P6T, Nvidia 670, 6gb dominator, watercooling)

but the opportunity to upgrade has arisen and this pc is over 2 years old so time for some updates!

I will be keeping the Pump from the watercooling, then Nvidia graphics card and the hard drivers. Everything else will be bought new.

What do you guys advise with a budget around £1000 perhaps a bit over if its worth it.

Key other requirements = quiet (hence why i use water) and a small as possible case whilst being able to have easy access and fit a double rad in for the CPU loop, i currently have a Cm Cosmos which is far to big!

Thanks for any advice, im out of the loop on pretty much everything apart from my graphics!

edit: had a look and heres my initial idea...also ive since swapped out the processor for the 'K' variant!

Try and push for an AX650/AX750. They look so much better with all the cables being the same IMO.

Also change the SSD - OCZ are unreliable

Yep take a look at the Samsung 830. Excellent device for a great price (£90) atm due to the new 840 drives being released this week. Saying that the 840Pro is only £120 and definitely a step up over other SSD's at this price point if your willing to wait a week.

I would be surprised if you need anywhere near 3m of tubing, I have only ordered two for my loop.

Mayhem is my only choice of coolant as it seems to be higher quality than allot of others out there and come in some amazing colours. Dyes are readily available to adjust also. Last longer than most (around two years) with 24/7 use.

If you are going for red coolant you don't need the ice red tube. It will make the coolant a different colour compared to the tubing and actually be more pink(ish) than a clear tube res.

I would suggest the Seasonic X-Series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply. It is a great piece of kit. It is £25 more but works really well and worth it.

Is there a reason you are avoiding the 2011 socket because you could get an Assassin 2 (£309) or Big Bang X Power (£299) and i7-3820 3.6GHz (£240) and save a little cash while also adding a little more future proof and gain some of the other benefits 2011 socket brings.

On an overclocking note you can see although the 3820 is locked people have been pushing the 4.6/4.8GHz stable. Some have even hit the 5.0GHz mark which is damn impressive for a 'locked' CPU.

Even if you took the more expensive SSD & Power supply but the Big Bang motherboard set-up you would only be spending £25 more plus saving £3 of tubing.

I don't think you have mentioned it but what water block have you got and are you looping just CPU or with the GPU too?

Kind Regards,

Adam

hi guys,

this is what ive got currently as my plan...

how does that look?

Reason i havent gone 2011 is just that i dont know if i need the extra power for the cost!

Yep as shown the Seasonic X-Series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply is really spot on and for the price difference you won't notice anything.

The cost is nothing, in fact both the builds I showed you I saved you money over the LGA1155 socket due to the slightly cheaper motherboards.

The rest looks good though.

Kind Regards,

Adam

Oh and in regards to the XFX I hear allot of people complain about the clicking noise the fan makes and people sending it back. Have a google about it and it should pop up easy enough.

thanks ive gone for the seasonic as suggested.

Im not sure on 2011 socket, i love asus mobos and the features on that one seem great, not sure id take advantage of 2011 socket...

is the big bang mobo really a serious piece of kit? it has bullets and a gun on the board.....

Oh you replied while I was typing. Yep the Corsair would be fine but double check if it is fully modular as allot of the Corsair are not. Which model have you chosen?

I have picked two out of the 3 top X79 motherboards with only the Rampage IV Extreme really being the next step up but was more budget wise so didn't include that in the list.

All X79 would be better future proof but saying that the 77w would still be a great choice and won't make the biggest difference at this stage in performance. Maybe a year down the line or so it may become more noticeable.

Adam

looking at the cost of the big bang board and a 3930k processor, thats a lot more than the IB build? as both processor and board are £100 more each

Yes the big bang is. OK so some do and some don't like the gimmy styling but check out the reviews and it has done very well out there in terms of support and overclocking.

Asus make some great X79 boards in your price bracket too. Any of the PX79 series are in your budget. The sabertooth has been highly rated but I personlly don't like the brown but if you don' mind it that would be my choice at your price range. The Rampage Extreme is easily the best single cpu X79 board at the moment and is only retailing in at £335 if you stretch your budget a little.

Kind Rgards,

Adam

I was comparing to the board you linked previous. The 3930k isn't needed. See my post about the X79 3820 and it's potential.

so i would be looking at this as a 2011 socket build? or would you recommend the slower processor to save cost? I wanted to know what ram to go for, i like the gimmicks on ram like the lights on the one selected but it dosent match the red and black mobo!

I would go for the Asus P9X79 PRO Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard if you want to be around the £200 mark for the motherboard.
