Building a new 1155 system

Hi guys!

I am going to build a new rig when 1155 becomes available, but I am not a 100% sure about witch CPU to get and

I have never overclocked anything in my lifetime, so I doubt that I will do so in the future, so CPU wise, I thought about the 2600.

I don't know about the difference between the regular and the K version, except locked and unlocked.

Can the regular 2600 CPU still overclock?

And, when it comes to RAM, I am still undecided, but I've been looking at DDR3 Kingston Hyper X, 1600 MHz, 8 GB set, I "must" have low profile RAM, because I want the Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler.

Do you guys have any other suggestions for RAM?

I am also undecided when it comes to motherboard, but I have been looking at Asus P8P67 Deluxe.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The 2600 can overclock but only very little. The K signifies an unlocked multiplier. I know that most will support me on this : go for a 2500k its a phenomenal overclocker and if your gonna get a 1155 chip you have to overclock it

. For ram gor for some mushkin redline ridgeback 1600mhz and for the mobo if you want the very best go for the gigabyte ud7 or go for the gigabyte ud4 or ud5 or if you only want asus theres the maximus IV extreme, p8p67 evo, p8p67 deluxe or even msi.

Thank you for replying.

Then I just might shell out for an 2600K then, it not that I really need an 2600K, but I want it, he he.

I read/saw the review on the UD7, looks promising, I really like the design too, it would look good whit the Gainward GTX 570 phantom. But, it does not have EFI BIOS? It might not be important, but EFI BIOS would be cool.

I still need to do some research when it comes to a motherboard...

I can't find any online stores that have an 8 GB set of Mushkin Redline Ridgeback 1600 MHz, so I must find an alternative. Mushkin is hard to come by here in Norway

Other computer parts will be as follows, the case will be Cooler Master HAF X.

I already have an decent PSU and GPU.

But my budget is ~ £750 / $1280 / €945 ±

The 2600K or the 2500K will overclock well the non k versions have locked multipliers so they can't ne overclocked. Depending how much you have to spend the 2600k is more powerful than the 2500K but is also more expensive so if you are on a budget go for the 2500K otherwise go for the 2600k.

G.Skills Ripjaws are good I have them myself but i'm pretty sure that the D14 will fit with the Kingston RAM as well but Google to find out just in case.

P8P67 Delux is a good board I have the standard P9P67.

I think I have fallen in love with the UD7 MB, beautiful design
icon_drool.gif
even if it lack native UEFI BIOS, but that's not important.

I don't know the Norwegian price on UD7, but I guess it will be about $410
sad.gif

I found [ Ripjaws-X ] F3-12800CL9Q-8GBXL for an reasonable price, about $130.

So, my new system might consist of these parts:

CPU: Intel 2600K

Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

RAM: Ripjaws-X, 8 GB

MB: Gigabyte P67A-UD7

GPU: Gainward GTX 570 "Phantom"

PSU: Corsair AX 850

Case: Cooler Master HAF X

I will be using my "old" HDD's (~4 TB)

I will also be using my old opticals, but I might buy an BD-ROM...

EDIT 1: I forgot to mention the monitor; Samsung 24" LCD Syncmaster 2493HM (1920x1200)

EDIT 2: The Gigabyte P67A-UD7 has a price tag of $438 / £278 / €328 in Norway

If I buy that board, my budget will be blown with $105 / £66 / €78. Witch mean that I can't buy an BD-ROM.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to reply

That looks like a solid build
smile.gif
I can't see anything wrong with it, go ahead and buy but do some shopping around to see if you can get things cheaper
biggrin.gif

Nice build mate but you could go for a 2500k and get a better case unless you really love how the haf-x looks (i hate it). Other than that solid build and I expect some pics, mind you I want GOOD ONES!!!!!!
biggrin.gif
. Also will the G-skill ram fit under the nh-d14 you could always get 2x4gb mushkin kits. But do you really need 8gb do you do video editting or graphic designing most games dont use more than 85% of 4gb just a thought. Also look if u can get 2 4gb ram sticks like the corsair vengeance.

I really want an 2600K CPU and since it's price is within my budget, so why not
smile.gif

I like the look of the haf x case and the price is right. I was considering obsidian 800d, but it's too expensive, it costs ~$168 more than the haf x
sad.gif

I will post pictures, but they might not be really good ones, since I only have my phone to take pictures with
tongue.gif

According to noctua's website, ripjaws-x will fit under the nh-d14, but the vengeance won't fit. mushkin RAM is hard to come by in Norway. kingston, corsair and crucial is the most common brands.

I'm not sure if I really need 8 GB RAM. I do some videoediting in viritual dub, but I don't do any graphic designing.

I need to do some research on 4 GB vs 8 GB.

The gtx 570 and the ax850 already sits in my computer
wink.gif

Both of them sure are quiet
biggrin.gif
And I haven't gotten a higher temp than 64 celsius, 36 celsius idle on the 570
smile.gif

I still am a little unsure about witch motherboard to get, but ud7 looks like a winner...

Go for it mate, it's a system to be proud of
smile.gif

For RAM though I went for 4gb but I use Photoshop quie a bit and wish I had gone for 6 because I do use the full 4 and could do with a bit more. I don't know how video editing compares to Photoshop in terms of RAM usage but if it's just as demanding go for 6 or 8gb.

As for the motherboard, Tom recommends the UD7 so i'd say go with that.

24 phases of power.... /drool best mobo

24 phases of power is sure a nice thing, but the price to pay is far to high for me, UD7 is $169 more compared to Asus P8P67 Deluxe, witch have 12+2 phases of power, I assume that will be enough for me, I don't plan on any overclocking.

So I might go for an non K CPU, since they can if fact be overclocked, but it's limited (max 41x multiplier).

And I did read some articles about RAM and 4 GB would be enough for my use.

So, since I save a little here and there, I might as well throw in an SSD and an BD-ROM and still be under my budget

Sounds good

You will benefit more from a SSD than 4gb of more RAM you wont use and if you aren't going to be doing high overclocking then the P8P67 Delux is just right, you could even save a bit extra and get the P8P67 Pro. If you want to save even more you could also get a cheaper cooler like the Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus the D14 would be overkill, although still nice to have, but if you are not overclocking the Coolermaster would do a good job.

Yes, I think 4 GB RAM would be enough for my use. And the 40 GB SSD I am looking at is fairly cheap ~$105.

I can get the BluRay-ROM for ~$80.

And, if I go for the Pro instead of Deluxe, I can save even more money

Get an UD5, problem solved
biggrin.gif

It's a nice card, but unfortunately, the UD5 has "only" 6 SATA ports, I need 8
tongue.gif
I currently have 5 SATA devices and plan on getting more SATA devices.

A controller card would probably solve the problem, but the price on SATA controller cards are just too high, at least here in Norway. A 4 port SATA controller costs about $135
ohmy.gif

Off topic, almost everything, no matter what you buy in Norway, it's likely to cost 25% more than compared to US prices
tongue.gif

Imagine paying almost $3 for an small can of soda. Or imagine paying $17 for a pack of smoke

I hope the revisited cougar point chipset roll out FAST to OEM's, so I can get my P67 system already
tongue.gif

According to the press release, Intel started to ship the chips today

i decided to wait on bulldozer to see what it has to offer... only a few months away 8 core sounds awesome for video editing and itll definitely be enough for gaming

I don't have much faith in AMD
tongue.gif
But we'll see...

Curious about the Intel Z68 chip, I wonder if it's going too preform better than P67(?).

I think I have found the RAM I want, Kingston HyperX blu, they have good performance and can easily overclock to 1866 MHz, they are cheap too
smile.gif

But, since the new motherboards won't be widely available anytime soon, I guess I will be building a new computer in March sometime...

And thanks for the input guys

I read somewhere a while a go, can't remember where, that Z68 will basically be P67 but you will be able to use the IGP in the SB processors.

I don't know how true that is I just remember reading it, but if it's true you might be able to use the Intel quick sync feature as well and maybe Intel insider.
