Hi I am wanting to build a gaming computer for about £500 I don’t mind if its amd or intel. I'm just looking for the best overall performance.

I would like to overclock but not with watercooling at the moment just air cooling.

I already have a windows 7 setup disk.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums btw, i see this is your first post. What sort of games are you going to be playing?? Also do you already have a monitor and keyboard setup or will that need to be purchased too???

Thanks, yeah I alread have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I play all sorts of games RPGs, FPS, Fighters and action games

Would also suggest a amd 4100 not the 6core (it makes no difference to gaming). I will suggest a build in a hour or two when I have more time!

I put together this build a couple months ago. It is still a solid gaming build for under £500. I noticed that there are a few things in here that you will not need or already have but this could give you a good idea of what components you can consider in your build.

These prices may be off by a little bit.

ARIANET Synergy Black Midi Tower Chassis w/ 450W Power Supply #47026 £ 16.99

PowerColor Radeon HD 6850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card #47805 £ 82.99

GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 PCI-Express ATX Motherboard #48467 £ 42.99

AMD Bulldozer FX-4100 3.60GHz (3.80GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 4-Core Processor #46818 £ 69.99

8GB Exceleram Value Series LP E30113A (2x4GB) 1333 (PC3-10666) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM CAS 9-9-9-24 1.5V #48306 £ 23.99

320GB Western Digital AV-GP 24/7 SATA II Hard Drive - CLEAN PULL #48044 £ 41.24

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit, SP1, Operating System, Single, - OEM #38271 £ 57.50

Sony 24x Internal DVD-RAM+/- Writer SATA Black Bare Drive #48288 £ 10.91

19" AOC E950SWDA Widescreen LED Monitor - Black #47597 £ 55.99

Basket Total £ 402.59

Delivery Costs: Approx. Delivery £ 8.17

VAT £ 82.15

Total £492.91

Everything needed for less that £500.

Sebar you need a 64Bit OS mate, and i wouldn't buy one of those cheapo cases with cheapo PSU included for £17

EDIT: Just made up a build...

CPU: AMD FX4100

Mobo: Asus M5A99X Evo

RAM: Corsair XMS3 2x4GB 1333MHz

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6850 (or an Nvidia GTX 560 for a little more on Aria)

PSU: Be Quiet PurePower L8 630W

HDD: 500GB WD Caviar Blue

Case: Corsair Carbide 300R

CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo

All that comes in at just under £500 (or about £5 over with the 560)

True, 32 bit Windows only supports 4 GB Memory but it was cheeper at the time to get the 8 GB kit. The list I posted is only for reference as to what kind of hardware you can look at. I know that the OP already has an OS and a monitor so there is no need for those items. When building on such a small budget it would be silly to waist money on buying a fancy case and PSU. these items are easily upgraded later.

It's never silly to spend a lot on a PSU, skimp out on it and one day it'll go pop and take the rest of the components with it. With cases it's the same for me, personally i'd hate to spend hardly anything on one because it'll be a pita to work with and it'll be made from tacky materials, but i can understand why people spend less on cases if they're on a tight budget.

Thanks for all the replys, would anyone reccomend an i3 2100? over the amd 4100?

I think the graphics card will be the 6850 because I heard you can flash it into the 6870

Afaik only the 6950 can be flashed to a 6970, the 6850 cannot be flashed to a 6870

The AMD 4100 is the better processor of the two. Close in performance but AMD still pulls ahead. Plus the AMD chip can be overclocked.

The 6850 is a very good card for the price.

You could also consider the A8-3850 APU, it is at a good price point.

Yea the i3's are fine but you can overclock a 4100 on the stock cooler to 4.3/4.4 so that's why the AMD makes for a better budget build.

wow nice, that graphics card is a beast

Also I've read that the older Phenom II X4 9xx processors are better than the fx range? Would I be better getting the older cpu?
