Ok so I went to a LAN this weekend and a friend had a EVGA GTX460 I think its 1gb any ways the story is that he removed the heat sink and fan then put it back together now the card gets to 100+ degrees Celsius under load and in games. He was over it and said I could have it for $20 AU (£13.20 GBP) I thought why not as it works just over heats.

I got home not long ago ripped the cooler off and remounted it as I would a CPU, But still the same issue.

Any ideas how i could fix it?

Are you able to flash the bios on those cards? If so do that. Get the stock bios from Nvidia and flash the cards bios.

i don't know what u used, but maybe some better thermal paste ? If it has a vapor champer, see if there aren't any holes in that, and check if the heatsink is deformed where it attaches to the gpu, really don't know what else to do tbh

I do not believe it is a vapor chamber heatsink

I had a look at the heatsink from a angle and it looks twisted like top left and bottom right looks higher then the other corners, This may be the issue, it cools the same as my asus GTX460 at idle but only under load it cant keep up.

I might buy a aftermarket cooler for it.

Stick it flat side down on a mirror or a peice of glass. and see if their is any rocking to it.

If their is you can either screw it down hard to something nice and flat. and blast it with heat to try and get it to sit flat again. or replace it with an aftermarket one.

Sadly a lot of these had overheating problems. Ive had a couple EVGA's that did it. They generally replace them as they are fooked.

The card? of just the cooler is fooked?

He cant RMA it as he lost the invoice and no longer can return it that is why he sold it for cheap.

Is it worth buying a aftermarket cooler for a 460 now days?

the 460 is still a great card if you play under 1080 res but once you get much above that it starts to struggle.

for that price its well worth taking a punt on a 3rd party cooler imo mate.

Also were there any washers? Maybe buy some in a hardware shop get more tension on the gpu!

Yeah that was the one i was looking at but they list is as only compatible with older cards like 2xx series My link

Dose this but a bit of searching and people have them on the GTX460 is the site just not updated and really dose work with the GTX460 or do I buy a kit like This

But that says it is for the Accelero Xtreme Plus, Or dose it work with other Arctic cooling GPU coolers?

Alternatively there is this but it is a fair lot more than the other cooler and probably is over kill as I probably wont OC the card as I will have them in SLI, Well try to get it to SLI with my ASUS GTX460.

i think the 460's are still little monster espesh as you can get them new from 100quid and they OC like maniacs

The card will be the problem. They are renowned for the odd one being faulty and getting super hot. Its the actual gpu core thats fooked
