Broke 3ghz Barrier!

Yep, now that I have adequate cooling, I've finally been able to push my CPU farther. Managed to hit 3.05 ghz with 1.57 vcore :D Prime stable for 3 hrs (not much, but my dad's not letting me leave the computer on :( so I have to stay up all night at some point and prime it then and get a 6 hr prime stable)

Primed:

New Superpi time (RAM untweaked so far):

I think I could push farther, but this stupid motherboard's limit for vcore is 1.55  Thankfully it has some pretty bad voltage regulation so it actually goes up to 1.57 :D Anyone know of any modded BIOSs or anything? I'd rather not do a vcore hardmod since likely as not I'd screw it up. Any ideas?

1.7v vcore is far too high on air cooling mate. Well done on 3GHz but you'll load up the resistors and electronic capacitors on the chip on air

Well... well... you should look at the picture! <runs away>

And to Ham, I have a Thermaltake Big Typhoon. Load temps right now are 36-38*C.

Now, I have the possible option of trading my A8N-SLI Deluxe for a friend's DFI Ultra-D (when he tried booting his new computer, nothing happened, but I'm more inclined to think that it's cause he's using the crappy Raidmax PSU that came with his case than a dead mobo). Think I should?

Despite the low reporting of vcore by cpuz etc, you should still be aware that there is a high chance that your vcore WILL fluctuate up to 1.7, and if it does, you could land urself in some sticky processor shit ;)

Woah! That Thermaltake Big Typhoon looks good! And so does the price. Any idea how it would compare withe the XP-90?

Well, actually the core fluctuates frequently between 1.568 (so I rounded off, who knows the difference?) and 1.584 and even (very rarely) 1.552 and 1.60. However, nothing bad or anything happened so far. But ya, any opinions on whether I should trade? And if I do, since I have hard drives in RAID, do I need to set up the array again and have to install everything again?

Gratz on passing 3ghz mate! That's quite the accomplishment in the :amd: realm. Especially when it's done on air :D

:beerchug:

(At Ham) If you're talking about the plain XP-90 then as far as I know this thing blows it out of the water. For the XP-90C, I think it would at least be a lot closer, though the Big Typhoon would at least do the same for a lot less noice. Keep in mind that I replaced the stock fan with a medium speed Panaflo. Also, this thing is massive. If you have a small case, it may become starved for air. Me, I have a 120mm fan hole cut in my case window and I slapped a 120mm fan on the outside so the Big Typhoon is supplied with a solid supply of fresh air.

Cheers WC, Im thinking I might get one of these. At the moment the case is totaly open and when ive finished with its cover its going to be like swiss cheese. I have a 120mm & 92mm fan putting air into my case, then a 120mm on the top extracting it. What im worryed about is my PSU. As vandam seams to have scamed me out of £40 it gets very hot. More holes are in order i think.

Congrats on the 3ghz, and thanks.

Yeah i hit 3.2 with my Opteron 148 :)

Hardware:

AMD Opteron 148 from Newegg.com--Retail (Gunsmoke a.k.a Matt's)

0SA148DAA5BN

CABYE 0543FPMW

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (Newest BIOS)

2x512MB Crucial Ballistix PC3200

Connect3D Radeon X800GTO -- 16 Pipes

Tagan 2Force 480w SLi - Pot's Adjusted To Preference

ALL AIR COOLING. XP-90C w/Panaflo M1A -- Arctic Silver Ceramique

Brand new chip, never used.

CPU-Z Validation -- SUICIDE. Max vCore Allowed by my mobo. 1.69v in BIOS. ~1.67v in Windows

http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=57192

hows that for an MSI!

EDIT: AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GO HIGHER ON THAT 3700+ at 27c !!!! what are you waiting FOR!

Grats on the 3.2. If that's prime stable for at least 6 hrs, we have a new record :D BTW, what were your temps? That 27*C is the idle temperature. Actual load is between 36*C and 38*C. And what am I waiting for? A stupid motherboard that can support a higher vcore than 1.57 (1.55 in BIOS, 1.57 in windows) I may trade this board with a friend for a DFI Ultra-D though I think I'll need a new PSU :(

didnt you used to have an abit, they are good overclockers

I never used an ABit. I still have that one that came with my 3700+ sitting around here (AN8-SLI) but I was too lazy to switch it out. However, I now have the possible chance to trade for a DFI Ultra-D, though I'll have to buy a new PSU (sell the old one to my friend :p ) Not sure whether I should though, cause I'll have to do it without telling my dad (he would not approve  )
