AMD FX 8350 Really that hot?

Okay, so today I upgraded my system from a Striker 2 Extreme and a Q9450 to a Sabertooth 990FX R2 and a AMD FX 8350.

I used the Hyper 212+ HSF that was installed before, Didn't I shit bricks when the load temps pretty much on stock was 60c+?

At 1.4v stock vcore voltage, The system trips and turns off running Prime 95 Small FFTs (Let's hope I've not damaged the chip). I've managed to tweak it down and even managed to clock it to 4.2Ghz at 55c Full Load. But the HSF isn't hot to touch at all?

But this is not what I expected at all, and I'm curious as the whether I might have a faulty chip. I also re-seated the HSF and applied a tad bit more of CFIII TIM. But still, high as a pancake.

Is it me? is it that my cooler really isn't up to the task of cooling a stock 8350? I was hoping to clock it to atleast 4.6Ghz.

Do I really need a Corsair H80i? and for the life of me, why the amount of voltage regulation and phase adjustment in the UEFI! Yes, It's great but... can add dilemmas!

It seems so, I just didn't expect my 212+ to fail at cooling so badly at stock! God help the stock heat sink that comes with the chip.

the single tower HSF will not disapate that kind of heat generated from that
platform to well. and looking to the H80/i will be a narrow effect in cooling for
comfort. you need some mass transfer.
the NH-D14 or Phantecs TP14 for HSF choices or H100/X60 styling coolers
to hold a decent temperature if you plan on achiving better clocks, in the future.

Glad I know it's the norm. Just a bit of a shocker that's all! I'll run it on stock for now, No point overclocking too 4.2, very little gain to be had - if at all.

I'll look into cooling options, The H80i seems to be a popular choice for the 8350, But I know how kick ass the DH-14 is, and like you say this is one hot chip that needs mass heat transfer so the DH-14 will probably outdo the H80i in that respect.

To be frank, nothing is going to stress the CPU high enough to cause those temps. I could of course overclock and the most i'll ever see is mid 50s in general use / gaming. But still I like to know my CPU is cool under extreme loads

I would search around and see if the NH-D14 is effective on that CPU. I know it's so so on socket 2011 chips.

Personally I would opt for the H100/100i.

The stock voltage for that chip is more around 1.35-1.375 so youre running a little hot and you might need to re-apply your TIM cause that's too hot.

When I first got my 8150, I overclocked it on my Hyper 212+ and was able to get to 4.3 if I remember right and keep my temps under 61C. Once I got the voltage over 1.4 is when the temps really started to rise. Bump the voltage down to 1.35 and youll see a BIG improvement.

Still, if youre planning on doing any serious overclocking with that sucker, youre gonna need better cooling. A D14 or H100 would be preferable. My H100 handles mine at 4.6 and keeps my temps under 62C under OCCT on medium fan speed. During normal use (gaming and internet) I can keep the fans on low speed and my temps never get out of the mid 40's.

The 8100's are a little hotter running than the 8300's so my results should translate to your system.

Thing is, I re-applied the TIM (paper thin layer), and re-seated the heatsink. I'm just going to run it on stock and get a H100, No point in wasting TIM and frustration having to take off the heatsink again.

Just been playing ARMA 3 and a few other games and it's at 35 to 36c. I can live with stock speeds for another week

Sounds about right. My h100i with SP120 Performance+Resister cables in push pull, CPU under volted to 1.00 gets me over 60C with OCCT. That's with a i7 3770k...

Just a quick update:

Under-Volted to 1.225v. Been stable for the last hour, Max temp: 49c which is exactly the same as my old Q9450

Quite surprised at how little juice it actually needs, compared to the stock 1.37 - 1.4

Yeah even my FX-4100 undervolted to around that at stock clock speeds (I could get it lower but after a boot into the OS the system would start acting wonky). It's ridiculous how much juice they send these things at stock.

Temps on my FX 4100 are, @ 4 Ghz and 1.36V on an H100i with two SP quiet edition fans running at half speed, at around 37-38 at max load after about 45 minutes. I can, and have, most definitely pushed it further, but I don't really much see the point with this particular chip as I don't like that in order to get it to 4.2 stable I need just under 1.4V... no bueno...
