Boot loop MSi z77a gd55

Please help me, ive just built a new rig, my first ever, and decided to go for the new 3570k and an msi z77 gd55. However i am having problems as the motherboard is stuck in a boot loop. I turn it on and then it will shut down and restart again. The time it takes to restart varies, but due to this i cannot access the bios as it just restarts, i cannot install windows as it just restarts. I have tried with one stick of ram in the first dimm slot, i have tried clearing the cmos, and now i don't know what to do. Do i need to rma the board, is it a cpu problem? Any help and suggestions are much appriciated.

(system specs are:

3570k

msi z77a gd55

Corsair vengence 8gb 1600mhz low profile

corsair force 3 120gb

mushkin joule 800w psu

no gfx card, yet

check your cpu heatsink first, unplug anything you dont need i,e, spare ssds etc. just mobo cpu one ram, one hdd, and nothing else

also just looked on msi, you need newest bios to run that chip, i assume you checked that before hand right ?

im not sure how msi boards work but try taking the cpu out and just plug the power in and have bios in root in a usb port, if that doesnt work you need older chip to install the bios, or go to local it shop

This is the same problem i'm having with my MSI z77 GD65, booted fine first time, set the BIOS up and now it shows an error code 55. It just powers up and then resets, rinse and repeat.

I have tried different RAM so I know it's not that and i'm using all my other components in another motherboard right now so I know it's not them either. Interesting to know i'm not the only one with this problem though, if you find a fix or find out what the cause is please let me know because unfortunately I can't return mine to get it fixed.

EDIT

Just saw this thread on Aria

hey are you putting you're memory into dimm slots 2 and 4? They're the first ones to be filled if you only have two sticks.

looks like a bios update is needed - sure there must be a way to do this without an old chip otherwise no-one would ever buy the board right? Download the bios update to usb on another pc and try to get it updated, otherwise rma I suppose. Does the board have those led post lights? What do they show?

ok so i tried to boot with no cpu in order to update the bios, it doesn't work. I would try flashing the bios with the cpu in, but if it powers down half way through wont that mess up my motherboard? i removed the cpu cooler and cpu and then put thm back in, and although the problem still happens it seems to go longer before restarting. i am now trying one dimm and switching between slots, after this i dont know what to do?

No i don't have another cpu umfotunately, and yeah i have tried the ram in slots 2 and 4. Do i need to rma it?

try shorting the CMOS switch. i fiddled with one or two bios settings and the pc acted just like yours. shorted the CMOS and everything was dandy again. you shouldn't have to update the bios, as i didn't with my z77a g43 and 3570k.

also why do you have to have ram in slots 2 and 4? i've got them in 1 and 3 (closest to cpu)... does it matter?

It's how they say to populate them in the manual - something to do with running in dual channel but if your's is fine then maybe it's rubbish.

I think just send it back to your retailer as non-functioning if you're sure everything is seated in the correct way - it should at least boot into bios. Check before you get the replacement that it will work out of the box with your cpu. You shouldn't have to mess around so much to get it to work.

If you do indeed need a bios update already, I find that very shoddy on MSI's part. It'd only be cos the mobo doesn't recognise the microcodes for the cpu, and in all honesty, to get to bios that shouldn't matter. Normally a mobo would just name it wrong and apply safe settings until you've made an update.

Oem mobos do it, but I'd expect that cos they pnly want you to use certain cpus in a range.

These things boot without a cpu ? I saw that in the other thread.

oops sorry op, didn't read your first post carefully enough. you already cleared cmos. tbh my bios occasionally craps up as well, honestly not a clue what it is. i'll change a seemingly innocent setting and them boom, boot loop. anyway i'd rma if i were you!

Mine doesn't boot without a CPU in, it won't power up until put it in.

Don't think i'm going to get mine fixed unless the MSI guy on Aria can help me

Hi CH97,

The standard options to stop this issue are :

- reset the CMOS,
- remove the motherboard battery for few seconds,
- use a bootable USB key (with RUFUS for example) to install the Bios with Dos,

And if nothing works, you will have to flash it with a connection from another computer. It is possible with a SPI programmer and a test clip.

More information: Guide to flash a Bios with a SPI CH341A mini programmer

While I approve of the method and the guide, this thread is 6 years old so for future posts please be mindful of the thread dates.
