[BL] Aria Guitar

hahahaha he was always in his Garage working on something :) and what he didn't know about electricity wasn't worth knowing. He has an old railway shorting bar that he had to use to test the circuit breakers that shows 25,000 volts

25000 volts? What?

Update

The finish on the back of the neck is.... finished! Got enough layers of wood-stain on there now to make it basically completely black with sacrificing smoothness. Now all I need to do is add 2 little details!

ArT61JM.jpg

If you hold it in the sunlight and look closely, you can still see the wood texture poking through.

With that out of the way I decided to sand down the headstock a bit for its first layer of primer.

Taping her up nicely

Left a very small stroke for gloss black paint on either side of the neck. It'll run in a straight line from the headstock sides to where the neck is attached to the body, so the matte black doesn't look too out of place :)

Put the first coat of primer on.

While great for having just a layer under your paint it's also a great way to spot the rought spots.

So, sanding that down again in an attempt to fix it. It's now drying from the second coat. I can already tell it's not perfect yet and I won't settle for anything less :D

The masking tape did its job well, my wood stained neck has been beautifully protected!

cdiqJAb.jpg

Even this worked out alright, I'll make the matte to gloss transition a little less awkward by veeeery gently wetsanding away the edges later

01vB3jf.jpg

I've now got a beautiful glossy black line on either side of my matte black neck

1D8oeOt.jpg

I'll also sand the gloss away so it's one smooth black line that curves towards the pointy bit on either side of the headstock.

Pulled the tape off the front, that'll take some sanding, but sanding it down was quicker than completely masking off the front in this case so ehh..

More sanding... *sigh*

Cleaning

I never normally recommend people to leave the tape sticking out from the top but it has always worked for me and just saves so much time.

If you just scratch the tape with your nail, even cheaper masking tape will do a really good job.

All taped up!

Thanks mate :)

Update

The headstock and neck fully stained, painted and dried. The back of the neck is stained, the back of the headstock and the sides of the headstock and neck are high gloss black and the front of the headstock is matte black.

Screwed the nut back on. Used to be a locking nut to go with the Floyd Rose but the locks got lost before I got the guitar. Tbh, I think I prefer to use the standard tuners anyway

LRC0ltQ.jpg

Put the truss rod cover back on as the neck is as straight as it's ever going to be, don't think it'll need adjusting when re-assembling the guitar and if it does I can easily screw it off again. Blends in lovely with the matte-black front!

And put the tuners back on after a good clean!

Sweet jebus! I see what you mean about having no logos now ;) Kudos to you dude, you've given her a new life, hows the body coming along?

Thats a really nice finish!

Thanks! Quite happy with it!

Sweet jebus! I see what you mean about having no logos now ;) Kudos to you dude, you've given her a new life, hows the body coming along?

Aye, it looks good doesn't it! Don't get me wrong, I don't mind tastefully looking or -placed logos but if there's the option to have a white logo or not on an all black guitar... ;)

The body isn't coming along, like at all. At the moment my neck is hurting a lot so sanding is a no go for me and my dad isn't willing to help out yet (even though he made me help him lift a f***ing couch out the living room earlier). Safe to say the neck is now worse and the guitar neck is the only thing I'll be working on.

Hopefully the body is either sanded, or I'll feel good enough to sand it myself when I get back from my UK trip after next week :)

the black gloss on that matt black is very, but very nice! balances so well, doing a good job mate!

Thank you! :D

Tiny tiny update for now!

While I was out I got another small delivery for some finishing touches.

One of them being a set of screws (only really needed 2 of them but eh) that screws the humbucker into the frame, as the stock ones were silver

The other part being these things:

Qhn9jD4.jpg

Internet cookie for whoever knows what they are

I guess by the quantity they are going to be used for a floyd rose trem system. They look like bump stops or string protection

Well, at least they're not dog cookies, Luca was very disappointed by this

0Rm8w4G.jpg

Put them on the fretboard to give me an idea

Masking tape for protection and black marker for direction

Drilling into a fretboard that is attached to 'good-to-go' neck is one of the most stressful experiences with guitars

ikbAg3c.jpg

But there ya go

GXQYbHY.jpg

I kept dropping one drop of superglue into the holes before filling them up with the dog treats

25q3nnM.jpg

The left 12th fret marker didn't go in properly, so I had to drill that back out again. Good thing I bought two bags otherwise I would've been one short now and be left with a hole in my fretboard.

lapB6c0.jpg

Sanded the markers down smoothly to be level with the wood

aP8afa1.jpg

Because of the sanding, the frets differed in colour, so I sanded the rest lightly too

vzMQ1wr.jpg

then gave it a good clean and right now I am slowly applying coats of lemon oil to make it darker again

eHemR6T.jpg

Gave it three coats of lemon fretboard oil last night and let it dry overnight, then one more this morning and it was time for pictures :)
