BFG 7800gtx has arrived :)

one thing seems strange tho...

I just jumped on BF2 to see how it plays and the BF2 logo appears (as usual) then the screen simply jumps straight back to the Desktop and the game doesn't start??

Anyone know what this may be?

Yeah i thought the clocks were 470/1300, but it's 520 cause it's a golden sample. Even guys on XS don't hit that stock!!!!

@Grov:

1stly Please edit out competitor.

2ndly Gainward's cards are 430mhz core or 470mhz for golden sample so I don't know where u got 520mhz from.

3dmark 05 reports it as 520, every game i play a game it reports it as 520 in rivatuner.

Ok I'm going to clear this up for good.

At the moment correct frequencies for 7800gtx core are:

Ones you set in Rivatuner

Ones you set in Coolbits

Ones you set in Systool

Ones you flash on with Nibitor

Incorrect frequencies (about 1.1x too high) are given by:

Rivatuner's hardware monitoring

All the 3dmarks

LOL.

Thats pissed on my bonfire. So what do i set it to manually in rivatuner? 470/1300?

EDIT, if i go to performance 3d it sets it at 480?

Also can i increase the fan speed of the GPU?

I just forced it to 490/1310 in rivatuner and i got nearly 100 less than the stock run??

So how do you explain that?

Well if you left Rivatuner open and didn't set 3dmark to realtime priority it could be that it ised some of your ram. Also it could be that it's overheating and throttling so both runs were at your throttle frequencies. Perhaps driver level overclocking slows it down in some way. Have you tried flashing it to 490/1310 performance settings? Also use SysTool and ATiTool from techpowerup.com to put the graphics card under load then read the settings in Systool (or in Rivatuner but they will be 10% too high) to find out whether it throttles. Or you can just check your temperature in Rivatuner.

My temp was 80C in rivatuner so i doubt it's throttling. I hope software sorts these problems out detecting the hardware, it's anoying.

Throttling starts at 65 degrees, it maxxes out at around 105 degrees before shuuting down at 120degrees so you are deffo getting throttling at 80deg Celsius.

It works like speedstep technology - auto reduces clocks to bring tempereatures down to a more suitable level - the higher the temp, the more sever the clock reduction.

AMD CPU's have a thermal rating of 75 degrees (I think) so it's no surprise to me that 80degrees on the GPU = throttling.

Best way is to run it 1st thing in the morning from a cold start with a household fan blowing into your case (with sidepanel removed of course).

Run it at the clocks you had before (only god for one or two runs before temps start to climb) and see if you improve you scores (knowing you have not changed anything from the night before).

If you have been throttling, the score should be higher than what you previously achieved.

What a load of ****ing bull ****.

80C is no-where near dangerous, what a lot of crap. Now i hate Nvidia. My X800XT PE used to reach 80C on stock cooler sometimes, and it was fine.

Nvidia are to fancy for there own good. Throttling starts at 65C? are you ****ten me? You can barely get under that on air.

I am given to understand thats the throttling point - not that it's full throttling at those temps, it's progressive as temps increase.

Of course you can run ur Nvidia card right upto 120degrees Celsius (if you want to??) but it's in everyone best interest to run as cool as possible.

They are only following Intel and AMD using throttling as a way of controlling temps.

I dont know enuff about ATI modern stuff but my 8500 overheated real quick and then crashed, it had no throttling.

Was there a point of overclock on the X800 where you got your best Benching score? and if that was lower than your max overclock it suggests that ATI had throttling too (I presume they do)?

I always try and play things 'devils advocoate' and look at what other manufactures do to protect the consumer, then consider the consqequencies of not doing something.

Thats not to say I dont agree with you (maybe not to the same boiling point you have expressed) coz I do, I think Nvidia are more conservative when it comes to these things (appeals to a more global market of non overclockers and shuttle users) and I believe they put reliabilty at stock above all other considerations.

Of course it's also a good reason to use Arctic Rev5 or ORB cooler or similar to keep those temps to a more 'conservative' level when overclocked and prevent throttling when benching.

My Arctic cooler kept my GT's at 68 degrees fully overclocked 2hrs+ of unreal tournament, the 7800 runs cooler than the GT so temps should be lower.

It's like the Intel and AMD heatsinks for their CPU's, they're okay but as an overclocker you'll look for a better solution (EVO33 anyone?).

Yep throttling is the thing consumers take for granted - for overclockers it is the bain of our lives.

How it is exectued by different manufacturers has mixed reviews.

I liken it to the starting mechanisms in F1 cars:

Renault - Fastest off the blocks - no catching it!! (this is ATI)

Maclaren - Quick, but only if it manages to stay in front at the start (Nvidia)

Thats as good as I could think of for an analogy but I hope you get me drift

My 7800s don't throttle at all before 90C Mav as I told you this morning. I know their lower limit is in the 30s and asking you to stay abouve 40 and below 60 would be pretty restrictive. I'm pretty sure those throttling temperatures are wrong.

I dunno - Although I don't go above 50 degrees now - I can't say for sure but I reckon maybe 70 degrees and I was throttling on air.

Mav is right though, there are other cooling solutions (especially for single cards) that will keep temps down to a more non-throttling level.

It sucks big time - but wot can we do apart from work within the perimeters we have?

I guess if grov does that test mav suggested we will know for sure.

Just get a lovely fatty custom water chiller for your cards :)

Actualy speaking of which I may need some one to volunteer to test an up and comming water chiller for me :D

CPU's and GPU's have no relationship regards temps, GPU are far hotter.

I think them throtling at 70C is complete ******** tbh.

That would mean nobody on stock cooling could run them correctly. Im gonna stick a few fans blowing on it, and see if it helps.

GROV ur attitude sux man!!

Fookin ell grov - if you dont like the answer dont ask, dont flame me for trying to help.

I'd try it in the morning - just looking at this now and I see no reason to not believe it.

I can only tell u wot my experiences are and I think I am right - you clearly think u know everything which is why u asked the question to start with right???

Looking at some of your posts I dont go flaming you on everything u say - mate I feel for your situation and was only tryin to help - I though thats why u had posted - I dont post here to get flamed, especially as u'd not even tried it yet.

Extra fans are only good if you blow cooler air onto it - on a day like today u shud wait until the moring when the room is nice and cool and take it from there.

First rule of posting - dont flame the messenger  .
