Better Router = Speed download over Ethernet ?

I have a BT router home 5 will a better one get me better download speeds ?

A better router/modem can increase speed/range/reliability yes, however it also depends on what you pay for. If you pay for 20Mb/s and are getting those speeds, then upgrade to a better router, it will still cap out at 20Mb/s. It's only worth getting if your current hardware isn't giving you what you are paying for

How do you connect your PC to your router? Reason I ask is that your router will automatically negotiate the fastest connection speed your phone line can manage. A new router will not be able to connect any faster.

If you connect to your router via an Ethernet cable, you get all of that speed as Ethernet is a very efficient way of transmitting data. If you connect via home plugs, you lose a percentage of that speed due to losses in the transmission method. If you connect via WiFi, it's even worse.

So before you consign your router to the bin and waste any money, make sure you have a direct wired Ethernet connection to your router.

If you have a fibre connection, your speed is utterly pants. Have you contacted BT to complain and see what can be done?

Just to make sure you are not mixing things up. You obviously have a 80 mBit/s line. Do you get 8 MegaBYTE per second or do you get 8 MegaBIT per second?

It's also worth pointing out at this stage the importance of capital letters too.

Mb = Megabits
MB = MegaBytes

1 MegaByte is equal to 8 Megabits.

Unless you're using a Wireless ''g'' router, have north of 54 Mbps (that's bits, not bytes) rated from your ISP and are using wifi, a new router won't speed your network up. Normal Ethernet is 100mbps, gigabit lan is 1000mbps so anything wired definitely won't get an increase.

If the OP is talking download speed I would agree I have 38MB fibre and get 4.1MB

Nah he said megabits.

An 80 Megabit line should give you a theoretical max speed of 10.2 MegaBytes p/s

(80*1024)/8 = 10,240 KiloBytes p/s

Let's simplify this are you talking about the speed of your network or the speed of which you are actually downloading something i.e a film or game?

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and click Begin Test. Paste the download speed number in here.

Run a speedtest like suggested above.

Also when you look at your download does it show as 8MB (uppercase letters) or is it 8Mb (lowercase b)
