Best Modular PSU for my build

Approximately, how many watts is needed for this setup and what is the best brand to get (preferabbly modular):

gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3p

q6600 (plan to max overclock)

ocz vendetta 2 cpu cooler

gtx 295 pcie card

1 m-audio revolution 7.1 pci sound card

1 IDE lg blu-ray internal drive

2 x 7200 rpm 320gb hdd sataII

1 usb printer

1 usb external dvd-ram

1 usb mouse

1 usb external 320gb hdd

1 ps/2 keyboard

1 firewire 4-pin 1394 device

There are 3 fans in my Lian Li case. I don't exactly know their dimensions but 1 is in the back, 1 is in front, 1 is in the top of the case. I think the ones in the front and in the back are of the same size and the one in the top side has the size of a cpu cooler fan.

I'm aiming for an 850Watts Modular, if that's correct, but I don't know which brand is good. The Corsair TX850W is good but is non-modular.

I hope you can help me on this. Thanks.

You're looking at something around 600 watts which will handle that rig nicely.

In terms of brands Coolermaster, Corsair, OCZ and Seasonic make some very nice units.

Yup but I think I can handle 850W for futureproofing :)

Is Enermax in the game? I'm liking their modular PSUs which can reach up to 90% efficiency based on the Anandtech reviews.

Pretty much, from any benchs i have have seen, the q6600 couldnt even push a 4870x2 to its limits, i just think his budget would be better spent on another aspect of his machine is all im saying ;)

I dont think so mate, something more aloong the lines of a q9550 with a gtx260 55nm would give you all the power you need, what screen are you running?

i'm not so sure what you are referring to dude. do you mean I can't reach 850watts with my rig? Or are you saying that the Q6600 is not powerful enough to handle the gtx 295? I'm confused on what you are trying to say, sorry.

I'm just on a plain LCD 1280x1024 screen right now but I'm planning to upgrade in the near future.

Right Ill clear this up. Most games still dont utilise all 4 cores on a quad. Youll be better off with an e8500/e8600 with a high fsb than 4 cores on a quad with a low fsb.

Quads are for benching, atm the dual will always get a better FPS because of the faster bandwidth.

But a quad/dual doesnt 'push' anything.

for max clock dual mate deffo. q6600 = 3.6 to 3.8

dual 4.2+ if you know your fsb from your fps

Oh I forgot to mention, I'm only "upgrading" my rig. Currently I have the Q6600 and I'm still gonna use that in my new mobo that's on its way now. I'm looking for a modular PSU that would power my rig properly and at the same future proofed. So pretty much I'm staying with the Q6600 CPU.

Side question: Is the Gigabyte GA-EP450-UD3P still the best board for stable overclocking?

what do you mean by "deffo."? sorry, i'm not used to forum terms, lol.

Yah, that's why I'm confused when fox said about something regarding "pushing" lol.

AFAIK, a decent c2d or c2q can power/push up a GTX295 without any probs. Also, the vid card is not really dependent much on cpu power right?

This "pushing" which f0x is on about refers to the amount of data the CPU can feed the GPU. Obviously the higher the bandwidth the higher your frame per second.

Personally, A Q6600 running at 3.6-3.8Ghz will run fine. Whatever CPU you get will have some sort of bottleneck on the GPU this has always been the case. When clocking the Quad try dropping the multiplier and increasing the front side bus. This will give you a higher bandwidth.

Under good cooling the Q6600 G0 can easily hit 4Ghz I have mine running 4Ghz 24/7. Runs like a dream. :)

But the higher the front side bus is the more stress is put on the motherboard. Basically make sure you get a good clocker. Have a look through some of OC3Ds reviews when a Q6600 was used.

Ermm, a Coolermaster Real Power 850w unit will be a good purchase as Ham said.

Deffo = Definitely
