Benefits of a Sound Card?

There's not alot of big science these days with sound, but I will say that games benefit from the effects soundcards can recreate over most onboard sound.

For music tho - there's nothing in it for recent(ish) hardware.

Oooo, that's good to know! I mean I listen to music but not as much as I play games on my rig. I want a sound card now.

I use the Asus Essence STX, and have been very happy with it. It's not made for the 7.1 speaker crowd with tons of outputs. It's much more an audiophile design. One thing it has is a built-in headphone amp, that is top of the line. The Xonar DX is probably the best deal around for good sound at a great price. You won't benefit from the STX unless you pair it with high quality speakers or headphones. Then it really shines.

I'm like you and I'm not sure whether I should get a soundcard or not, as my (brother's) £300 speakers that I use on my pc sound amazing and I'm only using onboard audio, so without hijacking this thread, would you guys recommend me one? I mainly use my pc for listening to music, gaming and movies if that helps
