A little bit about me:
Hi my name is Lewis and I come from a small market town called Llanrwst, which is about 4 miles down the road from the tourist town of Betws-y-Coed and 15 miles from the seaside town of Llandudno. I was born and raised here but am looking to move away to Manchester or Liverpool in September next year.
First experience with computers:
My experience with computers began with my dads old windows 95 pc, with what I believe contained an AMD K6 chip and a Gigabyte GA-5AX, it was kept in a box in our attic for years before my dad decided to take it down to the local scrap yard, needless to say I wasn’t happy seeing some classic hardware chucked away.
When did I start overclocking? :
I started overclocking with my Mothers old Compaq Presario PC which contained a Sempron 64 3200+. I had overclokced the chip from 1.8Ghz to 2.1Ghz using clockgen, which was pretty much the limit of the board. It wasn’t much but that sparked my enthusiasm in computers and from then on I had to know exactly how everything inside a computer worked and what parts did what job.
That led to my first build 6 moths later which is pretty much the same computer that I am typing on now, only with a few things changed from rookie mistakes that most people make when building their first pc.
The build consisted of :
Phenom II X4 955 BE (125w)
ASRock M3A770DE
Corsair XMS3 4GB 1600Mhz (2x2GB)
CIT 700w PSU
1TB Samsung spinpoint F3
XFX Radeon 4890
El-cheapo no name case.
With that rig I started competing with HWBot, as it was first real overclockable rig. I loved the competition aspect of the site, so then I had to get hardware dedicated to benching for the site.
First dedicated benching rig:
The first purchase I made was a DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra-B board. It was an absolute classic and it offered me the chance to do some competitive benching at a very low price. Most chips could be acquired for around £2 so it didn’t cost me much to get a few chips in to do a weekends worth of benching.
Best experience with overclocking :
My favourite experience with overclocking was using a friends Asus Rampage Extreme and a Q6600 chip. Both are my favourite Motherboard and CPU respectively, and are an absolute pleasure to overclock with. The fast amount of overclocking options in the bios made the Rampage Extreme arguably the best Socket 775 board ever made, whilst the Q6600 was able to overclock to at least 50% higher than it’s stock speed, which makes it a very good chip to work with.
What’s my favourite platform for overclocking? :
My favourite platform for overclocking is Socket A/462, it is a very simple socket to overclock with and in my opinion is a brilliant foundation to learn the overclocking art form on, as it contains the best of both worlds in terms of balancing out FSB speed with Mulitplier overclocking. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to start out overclocking but doesn’t want to destroy their nice shiny £250+ chips for a few points. The boards are cheap, the cpu’s are cheap, the ram is cheap and overall it is a very fun but simple overclocking experience.
Do I do any software tweaking?:
I do a little bit of software tweaking to try and max out the potential of my chips, but I don’t spend hours of everyday like some people, trying to get the best OS for a specific bench mark. All I tend to do is to get a basic OS and strip it down so I only have the bare operating system I need to have XP running. For me that makes for a very fast and very efficient OS for benching on, it also helps to reduce install times which is a massive bonus to anyone who benches regularly.
Do I plan on going sub zero?:
Well yes I do, and very shortly too may I add. I am going to be getting hold of a LN2/DICE pot as soon as I can and bench as much hardware as I can in a weekend. If everything goes to plan then that should be done in exactly two weeks time
Plans for the future regarding HWBot?:
When I get enough money together I hope to get a Z77 OC formula board along with a 3770K to do some 3D benches on a few cards I have lying around. That will also mean getting hold of a decent kit of ram, however I currently have a kit of G-Skill Ripjaws which I have not tested to the max of their ability, as I am limited to a maximum clock of 1750 (875Mhz DDR) with my Phenom II X4. They managed to stay stable at CAS 7 with these speeds so I have high hopes for the kit. I also plan on getting hold of my mates Rampage Board and Q6600 when he decides to upgrade. That will give me the chance to bench a very high number of CPU’s and hopefully get a lot of points for the team.
That’s me pretty much done, I know it wasn’t exactly as well organized or laid out as well as PCTwin’s but I didn’t want it to look like a carbon copy with different answers. I hope to see more benchers doing the same here soon, and hopefully we can attract some new people to come and join the bench.
