Battlefield 3 Noob Questions

Hi All,

I will soon have my new rig and will be moving from PS3 gaming to PC.

I usually play Blackops or MW3 but I've been looking at BF3 and can't wait to give it a go.

I have a few questions:

  1. To play online, do you have to use the Origin service? (Is Origin free?)
  2. Is anyone in a UK clan? If so - have you got any more info?
  3. Can you play BF3 on dedicated servers? Any pros/cons?

Thanks in advance,

James

As above but a little more detail.

1. You have to use the Origin Service whether you download the game or install it via the CD.

2. We have an OC3D Clan. You can find all the info in this thread: http://forum.overclock3d.net/index.php?/topic/38397-bf3-clan/

3. Yes and it would be a good idea to find a server with decent admin(s) to ensure that you have a nice all round experience (i.e. no baseraping, no blatant cheaters that no one can do anything about, unbalanced teams, etc).

No, Origin is free to download and there is no fee to run Origin. You just pay for the game once and play as many times as you want. Origin is just EA's version of Steam.

I have 1 little niggle with battlefield 3 on the PC. the fact its run threw a browser makes loading into a server or even a single player game take forever. I'm thinking of putting the game on my SSD to see if that makes it more barable

1. Yes, its free and it only starts the bf3 app and then goes into background, can use it for cloud saves whihc is very handy for lans etc. as you dont have to drag your pc there. its partly connected to EA(you can link games together)

2. yeah, OCUK has its own clan, check the home forum page and its the very last thread list

3. yeah only dedicated, pros? really best thing ever, the only way multiplayer fps can be played, remember host transfer in mw2? and mw3? Bops was the only game that got the dedicated servers right

its hard to start from lvl 1 as you get owned by everthing that moves, but once you reach lvl 5 or 10 you can start to dominate others as you unlock enough to do so : ]

btw great decision for moving from consoles to pc gaming

Also mate as a COD player expect much frustration when you first start. It is a completely different play style. I personally prefer the BF3 style of gameplay and have done since i played BF2 when it came out but i know so many cod players who get very annoyed at how quickly they are killed at first. Cod to me is very run and gun whereas bf3 is far more cover orientated. Just stick with it and you'll start to love it

TBH thats the kind of game I am looking for. Also the vehicles and map sizes appeal :-)

Let us know how it goes

You can also add me in friends, I am playing every day lately, so we could play in a party sometimes...

Yup the transition from controller to keyboard and mouse is hella hard. I am going through the same process and let's just say it's not going too well at the moment

took me a while before I could actually kill people decently XD

Once you get used to mouse and keyboard you will never go back to a controller for FPS games.

I have no idea how I used to play FPS games with a controller, I have tried since using the keyboard and mouse and I can't aim with a controller at all, and I used to be good with one.

I considered it but I figure that by the time I get my cross hair over to the enemy, I'll be dead lol

Yeah, you'd have no chance with the controller, much better to get used to the Mouse and Keyboard and when you do you'll never go back to the controller. I remember when i first played Counter Strike and i sucked hard, but i stuck it out and got used to the mouse and keyboard and now i'm ok...ish.

I used to be able to use the controller very very well on FPS games back when i used my PS3, but now it would take me quite a bit of time to re-adjust to it if i used it again. Tbh i only ever use a controller on PC for racing games cos i don't have a nice racing wheel and pedal setup

It's really not that hard coming from xbox to pc I adjusted right away maybe it's because I originated on pc bgack in HALO 1 C:E but I was like 12 at the time and this is 4 years later. If you try to use an xbox controller you will get steam rolled just keep your patience with the mouse and keyboard and you will get the hang of it, just make sure you have a decent mouse as it really does help. Keyboard not so much as long as it isn't those mac chiclet style you'll be good,
