Battlefield 3 Freezing

I have battlefield 3 installed on my old rig with an HD5770 and it freezes completely at random times in multiplayer games only. I can never get through a full game and if I happen to make it to the end game screen it will freeze before it shows my stats.

Reformatted twice, updated drives, disabled and reenabled sound devices, tried different graphic settings, old drivers, and it still freezes.

What can I do?

If you haven't uninstalled and installed, try that. I've heard many people having similar problems and an uninstall/install solved them. However, this does not work for everyone, but it's worth a try if you haven't done so already.

so you have tried disabling your soundcard and running the game without sound?

the only way i can play a game of it is with my soundcard disabled

But if that works... what is the point of a game without sound?

It's onboard... don't know if that makes a difference.

yeah thats what i thought when i was playing it, i just put up with the freezing now, hopefully they will make a fix soon

I'm thinking of just getting a new soundcard as i just use the one that comes with my mobo

You put up with the freezing? I can't get through one game! The computer becomes unresponsive. No ctrl alt del... have to hard reset. I can play for 5-10 minutes an then have to start over.

Is yours like that?

If it's a onboard realtek, there was a fix from bfbc2 for crashes

set sound quality to 44100/16bit via control panel -> sound -> speakers -> advanced

Not sure if it's the same problem you're encountering but a lot of people had similar problems in bfbc2 and changing the quality fixed it for them.

There are also some settings in the bf3 config for sound quality.

If this works I will owe you big! Thanks for the suggestion.

So, without any sound device plugged in (Ie. headphones or speakers) it runs fine. Then as soon as I plug something in, the sound lags, video lags, and eventually freezes.

What can I do to get sound and not have this issue? Sound card?

Has your card have a HDMI output, i would just use that audio, and disable the realtek via control panel, that worked for my mate.....

Onboard, and I realize that's the problem. Just didn't want to buy a sound card.

Xonar DG is good for headphones (~£20) but I've got the t-shirt and can tell you the drivers only remain fully stable on XP SP2, Win 7 they work but might start echoing and delete themselves if you're running modded games or just something really intense, though this only happens once every 4 months or so
