yeah, there's a reason for that corded telephone: it's remotely supplied with power. that means it'll still work when electrical power is out. one may argue that such an event is not very likely to happen over an extended period of time. BUT....(*g*) actually had happened where i live in 2005 over a period of several days (flooding). cell networks were down, broadband internet down as well (even cable tv...). landline networks were fed by diesel generators, so my good old faithful corded telephone was still working :-).

yeah, the sat phone would be most convenient. especially as 2012 comes closer :-). sat communication is often used around here in higher reaches. mobile broadband coverage is improving every month but you can't expect 7 Mbps on a mountaintop at 2500 m above sea level (exceptions: mount everest. they put an 3G repeater pretty close to base camp).

btw last (almost) citywide powerloss: today for 30 minutes. guess they were tryin' without nuclear...haha. bit of a pity. our UPS @work (something 20 to 40 kVA..dunno exactly) held about a minute...124% output, haha. just enough time to pass in front of the server room door to see the lights go off. my office is 10m away... phones were operational because supplied by diesel generators at a different location *g*.

didn't think this moment would come again so quickly :-).
