Backup/Sync program

Hey.

Been trying out Skydrive and Google drive. Pretty cool only I want automated backup of certain file locations.

I have been able to do it with these, only basically what ever you want backing up has to go in a special folder. This mucks up any other programs in terms of file access and is a pain in the arse if you only want certain subfolders backing up and not others (pictures..not videos kinda thing).

So is there anything which can do this without requiring to become the root folder...like uses file paths rather than physical locations. Did I mention free? If this isn't possible I suppose the family wouldn't mind joining cloud computing backup if it works well..

Could you use a script or something like xcopy to copy the file you want from thier original locations to the special one so the get picked up by Skydrive or Google Drive?

Yeh but then I'm guessing all my files would be duplicated?

Taking up double the space isn't good for picures!

I dunno. All the family photos combine to about 5-6gb.

Would be good to have all photos auto synced. Might work out cheaper to get a home server in the long run... Is there anything on offer ? Would be good at least to have documents synced to the "cloud"

I just added a WD live on my network , it has the option to set up a backup schedule for intire hardrive contents for every computer on the network, but I just have it set up like a straight NAS right now. You might want to read on the Western Digital site about the WD Smartware program that comes with the My book live. For $150, I think it's great!

I was able to move 16Gb of music off my SSD and now every computer on my network has access to it, instead of 16Gb on my main rigs SSD, 16Gb on my laptop, 16Gb on my Playstation, etc.

In the long run learning to keep important files on a NAS is the best way to go.
