ATi plans to push out their R580 graphics core in Q1 next year to replace the current R520 therefore X1800 XT will probably have only 6 months of life span. The new graphics series based on the R580 architecture will be known as X1900 and will be pin to pin compatible with the X1800XT PCB. The cooling design will be similar to the X1800XT. X1900 will be competing against NVIDIA G71 when the time comes.

Thats helping to create the picture for the new series of R580 cores.

R520 was due out in July (originally) so it's life was greatly reduced by the FRACAR that followed in terms of yield and extended deliveries.

R580 has the potential to be better than G71 - the problem for ATI is the the G80 is only a few months away after that - 4 month turnaround on GPU marchitecture??

I need to know prices asap :P this will determin if im gonna just get a cheap pci-e card to last until feb or get a x1800xl .

i go an 1800 about a month ago, this is just the way it goes...Prices will probs be similar, normally repeats the past

If i was you and you can hang on and wait for the new cards to come out,if it's to expensive you will be able to pick up a X1800 at a good price by then!

I hope ATI have learnt from all these damn delays, i was going to buy a new graphics card and new motherboard back at the end of august, but then they all got pushed back, now ive waited so long i might as well wait for the new generation of graphics cards and the RD480. Im just praying that it shows up on time!

My mum just informed me that my dad has already purchased an x1800xt512 for xmas for me :| So looks like im gonna go behind instantly on speed lol :P This card has to last me for 2-3 years though so im hopin its fast as i am now gonna spend time on another hobby when this rig is fixed up and tuned :)

I feel guilty for pushing him to buy this but its my fault and i presume it will be fast enough to play source on max settings, after all the source engine is the most optimized engine i have ever seen... 60fps on CS:S with mx44 whilst only 20fps on day of defeat(none source) go figuire :P

end of rant :P <3 James

The x1800xt will be plenty fast enough to run CSS at full settings. I can run SWG (very graphic intense) at full settings with full volumetric shadows on my x600pro with no problems at all, about 35fps (acording to FRAPS), which is the highest I've had it so far. Can't wait to get me hands on the 7800GTXs tho, I'll be a few behind but I don't really mind. I'll have brand new stuff again 1 day!!!

I agree here, no need to worry SAS91, the gfx market is rapidy changing, the next gen cards (after R580 and G71) will be designed for Vista anyways. The important thing here is unless you run 1600x1200 or are looking for bench records the X1800 will be a great card to have for a while yet and will outlast your CPU in that respect.

@ Boardy ur 7800's will be kinda special I think ;)

Interesting move by Nvidia with the ULI thing, means that when the RD580 is release Nvidia will be getting cash from it too! Hopefully the RD580 will let the ATI designs live up to their full potential.

Little update

ATi R580 is still on track for launch on 24th January, there will be 3 flavors at the start; Radeon X1900XT, Radeon X1900XTX and Radeon X1900XT Crossfire, the XTX will probably be a higher clocked version.

Another update

|The R580 die size is noticeably larger than the R520. If the process technology remains at 90nm for the R580, the estimated number of transistors stand at 350M or more compared to 321M for the R520. Radeon X1900 XTX will be clocked at 695MHz core and 1550MHz memory while the Radeon X1900 XT will be clocked at 625MHz core and 1450MHz memory. ATi has revealed that Radeon X1900 XTX will require at least 450W PSU with 30A in 12V rail. If in Crossfire setup, the system will require at least 550W PSU and the 12V rail will need to provide 38A.

Update

More than one source confirmed that ATI is preparing for a massive hard launch of its new line, as it will be able to ship the cards when it announces them. In fact, the cards are being sent to shops and OEMs as we speak and they are in production, so everything looks hunky dory for the Canadians right now.

Looking good for ATI ;)

Holy crap those are some serious power demands if those are true, these things must chuck out some serious heat!!!

YUMMEH!

How many PSUs can supply 38A on the 12V rail? I cant think of any off the top of my head? Most companies are going for split-rail now, not combined.

AFAIK - its not a single rail requirement - it's total power requirement on the 12v line to ensure a stable system in all dept's.

I would suggest that they are looking for more than the PCI-E standard of 8a though on a split rail system (which si what some 600w PSU's supply to the PCI-E in line with official specification of the standard) - probs more like 12-16a, which may mean using a PCI-E power adaptor even on an SLI psu just to give both cards the power it needs.

Man thats crazy!! - 90nm (or 80nm I think for this core?) is supposed to mean less energy requirement and heat output - looks like someone copied Intels Prescott engineering when this baby was designed :)

The 7800GTX uses less power than a 6800ultra - I would expect the power requirements of the G71 to be less than or equal to the unit it's replacing - if thats correct then maybe Nvidia's slogan for this unit will be '90nm done right' (in direct two fingered approach to ATI's sm3 slogan for r520 :)) of course this part is hear say by me as I have nothing solid to back it up with, might not be too far from the truth though, you just heard it here first ;).

ATI is still on track ATI has been shipping its R580 - the Radeon X1900 XTX - to them for some time. sounds good but hope ati ship enough cards, i hate watiign for weeks on end for a shipment to arrive to a stockest and they only have 20+ but 100 pre orders ><
