What would the best card to play high def movies?

4870 1gig or the 216 core

Currently have a 1900X1200 high def monitor

and a 7900gs 256 bit with a 256 ram

will I see any improvements if I upgrade my

video card?

other spec:

e8400 @ 3.6ghz

gskill pi blk 2X2 gig 4-4-4-9 @ 800mhz

Not so sure about "best", I would be thinking in this day'n'age both should do it.

nVidia do promote alot of HD processing qualities that have the card do the work rather than ur cpu. I've often questioned it tho as it doesn't take a heck of alot of cpu to do it.

What are you using to decode the videos?

If single core app then ATi is highly optimised for that so would be better

If multi core app then nVidia can hack the pace

both ATI's 4000 series and nVidia's 9000/GT200 series are seriously capable for HD movies. Yes, you'll get significant improvements by upgrading to these series of cards. For additional gaming purpose, both cards are good (in such resolution). My recommendation is, get the best deal for these cards (price, bundled apps, package, etc), but please be noted, these cards are hot (literally) and power hungry. be sure that your system is ready.

If you're not into gaming (or really high-res gaming), cards such Radeon 4670/4830 or nVidia 9600GT/9800GT are highly capable in playing HD movies (and support audio over HDMI also), be note that these cards are much cooler and power friendly. I'm using 4670 (priced $60 now!) for my HTPC and watch movies in 1920 x 1080 smoothly, and my PC's even not sweating at all (only consumes 200watts or so for the whole system).

hope this useful.

personally, my celeron e1200 can decode high bitrate 1080p on its own, so I would like to know what reasoning there is for recommending video card x to do this job :)
