You may have heard of ATI's AVIVO Transcoding software
If you haven't then here's a quick overview of what I understand of it.
AVIVO aims to make both the quality and speed of video playback and conversion faster and better quality. Thats standard def TV, HD and DVD.
This is a free peice of software that ATI have written for their 1000XX cards series. The good news for us all is that it also works on all ATI cards and nvidia cards.
The Technology
Image quality:
Image quality with this is greatly improved. The AVIVO software uses 10bit processing, rather than the standard 8bit. What this means: 1.07 billion colours, rather than 16.7 million. That means brighter, clearer and just plain better looking playback. Of course this will ideally be seen in HD - but if you already have a HDTV then your away!
Source: Bit-Tech
Connectivity:
Basically this is saying that a card with AVIVO should be able to support all of these connectivity types and therefore get the best out of your HD complient TV - but - you will have to have a HD complient TV
HD Video
Basically this is what AVIVO offers and ATI have been working on it for some time:
* Better video quality for DVD playback
* Graphics-accelerated decoding of H.264 high definition video
* Graphics-accelerated conversion of video from one format to another
I'm not going to go right into the ins and outs off all the excellent AVIVO features.
Suffice it to say that AVIVO increases video playback quality and speed, with less loss of framerates and increased quality.
This inclused playback and conversion of the H.264 video format - a HD format used by apple
This will work better with the X1000 set of GPU's with the scaling (as told by ATI) being:
Although we don't have anything talking about nvidia cards I think its safe to assume that the 7800GTX 512mb will easily handly the top res, as should the 7800GTX 256. I would expect the 7800GT could do as well, though its probably up to you to see whether your card will run any HD res below cascading down
Anyhoo - I've got this hosted @ :anisx: so get your free software: Here
Its a .rar file so you'll have to extract it

Enjoy

name='"Bit-Tech"' said:Because of the immense processing power required by H.264 video decoding, the different X1000 cards are only able to process certain resolutions. The X1300 can handle 480p and 576p content - basically, standard definition. The X1600 can manage 720p, which is the wide standard for high definition, and is what European and American HDTV broadcasts use. X1800 can manage the highest of high-definition, 1080p. ATI stressed to us that this isn't an 'artificial / marketing' limitation - the power is directly proportional to the pixel pipelines in each card.
