ATI 4890 IRRITATING fan speeds

hey everyone,

I recently bought an XFX ATI hd 4890, it is amazing in terms of graphics however,

the fan is incredibly annoying! as i am typing (obviously using no gpu power atall) the fan is whirring away,

which is fine because it is a big card... but the really annoying bit is how it keeps changing speed all the time, literally it does 1 second of 0%fan speed.. and then like 2 seconds of 60-70% speed and its doing my head in!

obviously when i play demanding games it will be running at like 60 or 70% but just for having an idle web page open!?!

my case temp usually runs at about 35-45 c so heres the question.....

at the moment im running ccc but dont have the manual fan speed enabled as i dont want to kill the fan if im just on the web,

does anyone know if there are any other apps to control the fan speed resonably? (such as running on 20% constantly during idle graphics rather than 0 - 60 - 0 - 60 - 0) i cant imagine everyone has this problem or no-one would get any work done!

I read some of the post since I have to go now, but you can change the fan speed in the control panel, clicking the padlock for overclocking, changing the fan speed and then applying.

I think you can do this with rivatuner but im not sure since i havent used it in months

Just set it to manual and put it at ~30%, won't kill the fan, reasonable temps, little noise and only CCC needed.

I got my new XFX Radeon HD4890 2 days. My XFX 4890 has the same issue! and i think every 4890 has this issue!

Being used to my XFX 9600GT's 'responsible' fan speed management, the switch to this new card made its noise instantly alerting.

Same fan noise problem with my HD4890. The fan is at 70-80% for a few seconds, then its instantly slowed to like 20% for a few seconds and this keep going on.

Very annoying indeed. i'm going to play with the CCC's Overdrive and see if i can manage this without frying anything.

Too bad, ATI or XFX should have taken care of this. I wonder what kind of people work in their QA departments. This varying noise is the first noticeable thing when you use the PC for like 5 minutes. .. Seriously, ATI / XFX ?? :|

nepas, looks like msi'sapp is better than rivatuner.

It takes ages to set up temperatures based on speed and temp.

Saying that I managed to get my card to sort itself out - changed the auto fan speeds and flashed it to the bios.

Hey, can you please write a few steps for a n00b in this area, how to do the same for my XFX Radeon HD 4890?

i've flashed my phones' and motherboards bios many times, i just need a little heads up, a n00bie when it comes to vid card flashing is what i meant.

yeah i got the app, checked its options a bit, but didn't mess with much stuff without knowing.

i did send xfx support a detailed issue ticket with all the links of other people reporting the same noise problem with their xfx radeon 4890s.

I did have a similar problem when I first booted with it, but it went away as soon as I installed the drivers. My guess is reinstall. Also, when idle, what temp do you get in ATI Overdrive from CCC? It should be ~50C, or less.

Also check that you have connected the power correctly(i.e. 2x PCIe)/aren't drawing too much from your PSU.

Hey thanks for the tip. Ever since i got my 4890 and got the 9.x drivers from XFX support site, the card was bugging me with ~50%-00%-~50%-00% speed variations constantly.

With your tip i uninstalled the drivers, got the new 10.x series catalyst drivers for my Windows 7 64 bit and finally, after the reboot i can see the fan stays at 33-34% speeds and doesnt keep variating speeds crazily.

So the headache of variation in fan speeds is gone. thanks
