Asus M.IV.E + 580 Matrix

I have a quick question, I just got an maximus IV extreme-z and in the manual (and if u look at the actually board) the first 2 pci lanes are both wired for 16x now I need to know if I put my GTX 580 matrix in the second slot (keeping the first one empty) is it gonna run at 16x properly like it should????

The reason I would like to know is because since I have the D-14 installed, I don't wanna keep it sooo close to the cooler, personally I like the look of the card in the second slot, but since this is my first build (and when I'm done I promise to start a quick build log/post pics of what my system looks like) I want to make sure I don't lose perfomance for the look.

I am currently in the middle of building it, I'm going to bed gonna finish (and try to cable manage tomorrow) and hopefully get a few pics up, then I'll write about what the systems like in a drew days....

I feel great btw this site (and TTL's YouTube channel) gave me the inspiration to do this EPIC first build of mine. I cannot wait to finish it and show u guys and get ALL the wonderful feedback / constructive criticism that everyone here is willing to give.

My motherboard is the same, but its recommended you put the GPU in the first x16 slot.

Anyway, even if the GPU is in the second x16 slot, running in x8 mode, there isn't much difference.

And cable management is annoying

I need to fix up mine.

If they are both x16 slots either will run at x16 with only a single card, its if they are both populated that it may get dropped down to an x8.

Ok so I checked in the bios. It's running at 16x but it says it's running off the nf200, will that make any real difference?

I'd be of the opinion that as they're both electrical x16, as long as you don't put anything else in the 1st slot, the 2nd slot should work as you'd like.

The slots are ever so secretly prioritized by the bios, along with stealthfully sharing assignments to other devices on the mobo. The further you go from slot 1, the bigger chance you'll be sharing with something along the lines of USB or Ethernet etc.

It's assumed slot 1 (whether pci/pcie/agp/isa) should be left alone during the pairing process as it's most commonly for a dedicated gfxcard that wants attention at all times for performance - and not leaving the user headless if another device craps out that lane it's using.

Try slot2, any issues, see if the mobo/bios is assigning irqs to the same lane.

I'd imagine putting something like a pcie sata card would similarly give it prioritized performance. ?? dunno.
