First a story.

I got the call from my brother, “I’ve got some money, what graphics card do you reckon for around £250~300”.

Of course, I gave him the benefit of my wisdom, for what it’s worth.

And he completely ignored it, buying this three bay 2GB behemoth instead.

Then he calls me and says, “Do you want to bench it then?”

Do pigs fly? Do sheep nest in trees? Of course I do!

But I’m cagey with him. “Well Joe. The only card you can have in the meantime is the 580 lightning.

I don’t want to give you that in case you start crying when you see it in action.”

To which he replied “HAHA”

So I arrived at his place to do the swap and he’s already ran 3dmark11 on it, managing to score 16k plus.

His is a Core2Duo E7400 DDR2 800MHz system at stock speeds.

In went the 580 and he ran 3DMark11 again, moaning that the 580 scored over 300 points more.

Honestly, this is what I’m dealing with here.

I assure him that on a cost basis, his purchase is fine, the 580 costs over £150 more.

Then I leave him to cry over Far Cry 2 as I exit with his card.

I’m going to do this on the Big Bang Marshall using my 2500K running at 4.52Ghz with 4Gb of DDR3 1600 CL9-9-9-24

Before I strip it and watercool it, I want to run all the benchmarks with stock clock settings, then maximum overclock on air settings, so here we go. First is the Windows 7 stock run.

3DMark01

3dm01.jpg

74393 points

This score would rank 34th out of 45 on hwbot.

Considering the other cards in that rank are all overclocked, the system will have to take some of the credit here, although the score above and below me were both using a 980X. There’s not many results been up for this card. That’s never a good sign, it usually means there’s fewer points to go around.

I do have some GTX580 stock scores, not all of them, but they were done on my i5-760 system, so remember this when comparing them. When I get the 580 back I’ll do a proper run with it on the Sandy Bridge kit.

GTX580 i5 system = 61572

3DMark03

3dm03.jpg

96018 points

42nd out of 51. Not much, but again amongst the overclockers. Surrounded by i7-950’s this time

GTX580 i5 system = 99433

3DMark05

3dm05.jpg

38352 points

33rd out of 40. Looks like the only points this exercise is worth are experience points.

GTX580 i5 system = 36804

3DMark06

3dm06.jpg

29484 points

40th out of 64. A few more submissions here, but still not enough.

GTX580 i5 system = 27639

3DMark Vantage

3dmva.jpg

22675 points

67th out of 82. Not bad for stock I suppose.

GTX580 i5 system = 23825

3DMark11 Entry

3dm11e.jpg

8422 points

10th out of 12. No points are awarded for this benchmark, so fewer people tend to submit.

GTX580 i5 system = 8994

3DMark11 Performance

3dm11p.jpg

5579 points

29th out of 45. Amazingly, worth 2.9 global points. Wow. 303rd out of 602.

My only other score submitted for this test was the GTX460, which scored 4197.

That’s only worth 0.2 points anyway.

GTX580 i5 system = 5904. I guess this would take the points though.

3Dmark11 Extreme

3dm11x.jpg

1827 points

13th out of 15. Very few submissions.

GTX580 i5 system = 1974

Aquamark

aquamrk.jpg

219094 points

44th out of 46. We’ll have to see what XP can do with this one I think.

GTX580 i5 system = 205024

Hwbot Heaven Xtreme DX11

unigine11.jpg

1236.115 points

39th out of 52.

GTX580 Sandy Bridge kit = 1311. I did run Heaven benchmark on the same kit.

Hwbot Heaven Basic DX9

unibine9.jpg

2712.255 points

12th out of 12. DOH!

GTX580 Sandy Bridge kit = 3133

That’s it for now. I’m going to experiment with XP

Nice

Volts are a bit high for 4.5ghz though should be able to get 4.5 @ around 1.3/1.35v.

Ahh cool, should be able to get 4.7 maybe 4.8 with 1.42v if your 2500k is a good one.
cool.gif

If its a good one that volts will hit 5ghz but ones that good are thin on the ground you know.

Cool thread pctwin
smile.gif
are you going to push the clocks on air too? Only it would be cool to know how well the cu2 really does with it being so maaaaassssiiiiiive it should be about the best air a gpu can get.

The first overclock run is over. For this I set the fan speed on the card to 100%

It’s not as loud as I thought it would be

I’m used to not being able to hear myself think with Radeon air coolers on max and, whilst it’s loud, it’s not as loud as my old 4890 stock cooler

Experimenting with the voltage couldn’t raise the overclocks any higher.

What I really need is a VGA bios editor that works with this card. Asus smart doctor is limited to GPU voltage only

3DMark01

3dmark01.jpg

75683 points @ 980x1470 1.231v

1290 points difference = 0.1 Hwbot points

This only takes the rank from 35th to 31st

4th on my table doesn’t even beat my old 4890. WTF
angry.gif

3DMark03

3dmark03.jpg

104239 points @ 1000x1470 1.237v

8221 points difference. Still only = 0.1 points

Jumps up the ranks to 28th from 42nd

2nd on my table beats the 4890. Not only that, it beats my old GTX 295 score as well.

3DMark05

3dmark05.jpg

39199 @ 995x1470 1.231v

Only 847 points difference and no movement in the ranks at all

This beats all my previous scores. Worth? = 0.1 HW points
blink.gif

3DMark06

3dmark06.jpg

30000 @ 980x1470 1.225v

Only 516 points difference but a movement up the ranks by 1 place, whoopee

Top of my table again

Worth = 0.1 HW points

3DMark Vantage

3dmarkva.jpg

23710 @ 960x1470 1.218v

5th on my table again

Worth 0.1 HW points

still to run this on XP. should be worth another 70~80k

HWbot Heaven DirectX 11

unigine11-1.jpg

1371.031 points @ 995x1450

134.916 points more and 15 moves up the rank to 24th

2nd on my table again to the GTX460 SLI

Worth 1.9 GP and 0.5 HW points

Unigine DirectX 09

unigine09.jpg

2940.054 points @ 975x1470 1.218v

227.799 points difference and 6 places up the rank to 6th

2nd on my table again

Worth 0.5 HW points

Never mind the voltages in the screen shots, that was just me experimenting

All the overclocks ran at 1.218v GPU with no problems

When an overclock failed I first tried ramping up the voltage. With the fans on 100%, I needed to find out if it was a voltage issue or a heat issue.

Using the log feature in GPU-Z didn’t really make things any clearer.

The 3DMarks crashed at a relatively low temp, while Unigine ran with a fairly high temp

I’ll do the XP benches then get on to water-cooling it.

Just a little heads up.

3dmark 3 & % do not require the use of the cpu tests. Just run the four game tests in 03, and the tree from 05.

3Dmark01 is the same. Just focus on the game tests, however the order in which you each part of the bench will give different results.

And most importantly XP
biggrin.gif

Ok, the watercooling is on.
biggrin.gif

What I want now is all your tips for the GPU benchmarks.

Anything that will improve the score will do.
laugh.gif

As moose said, XP and really push the CPU clock for the older stuff, CPU tweaker ftw.

Get the right driver, idk which ati are cool or not but there are plenty of modded drivers about.

Idk how to set the lod with ati cards but a little testing at slower speeds will show what's the best setting for it.

Right for 3Dmark 01 I run the rests like this for AMD cards:

You only have to run the 7 graphics tests, but run one at a time from the settings menu.

CL = Car low

CH =Car high

DL = Dragothic low

DH = Dragothic high

LL = Lobby low

LH = Lobby high

N = Nature

I run it in this order : DL-LH-LL-DH-N-CH-CL

It might be better to run Nature first as it's the one most likely to crash the system.

Always run the bench right after a clean boot up on xp.

You will also want to set the level of detail in the amd settings to Best performance.

I'll add some more later.

Can't get the CPU any higher.
sad.gif

Tried all sorts with it. no amount of voltage will take this CPU to 4.6GHz.
angry.gif

I don't know whether it's the marshall or the CPU, it just won't go.

The GPU voltage maxed out at 1.5v and that's all you get. some benches run at GPU 1100MHZx Mem 1470
biggrin.gif

Back to it. gonna try 2001 in XP.

thanks moose

Still at it, but on similar settings it's worth at least 400 points so far

still clocking.
coffee.gif

Edit: in 3dmark01 that is.

Can't get the CPU any higher.

Hi pctwin, had a similar problem with my ud-7,i had to disable turboboost, enable adjust cpu-ratio in os its called by msi, disable c1e and all other powersaving features, eist enabled, vdroop level 10,after i did these settings i could get higher than 4.5ghz on i7-2600k.

What about on the base clock?

The bclk at stock = 99.8.Had bclk adjust enabled ,100.2 x 50 = 5.0ghz read in cpu-z

Had it linx stable, but temps was 80+.But for folding i needed to lower multi to 48 and stock bclk = 4,789 at same volts.

ghz. Then i did 102.4 x 47 = 4.8ghz read in cpu-z and lowered volts to 1.4 and temps as well.

I am going to work now,and i can post my folding stable settings later today.
smile.gif

Some pics of bios.I throttled back from 4.8ghz,temps was a little high, folding stable at 4,7ghz.
