Are my GPUs too much for my PSU? Please help.

I have just purchased 2 new MSI GTX 680 lightnings to replace my old GTX 590, and they work fine, however about half an hour into a game my game just freezes and starts making a horrible noise instead of the game audio and the PC is just unable to do anything, so it basically crashes but without the blue screen, so I have to turn it off via the power switch. I think it might be that my rig is too much for my PSU (Corsair HX1050) but surely 1050 watts is enough? Also the crash happens more frequently when I raise the power target of the 680s.

i7 980 @4.3 GHz
Corsair H80
ASUS Rampage III Extreme
12GB Kingston HyperX Beast 1600 MHz
x2 WD Caviar Black 1TB HDDs (RAID 0)
x2 MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 lightnings
Corsair HX1050 PSU

that kind of wattage is overkill for your setup. two 680s should consume less power than your 590
test each gpu on its own to be sure neither gpu is faulty, try re installing drivers too.

while yes 1050 watts is overkill your statement on power consumption is inaccurate the 680 sli roughly 390watts the 590 roughly 365watts according to some sites comparisons. the 590 has 2 8pin connectors and the sli'd 680 will have one 6pin and 8pin each so thats 2 6pins and 2 8pins yes they are more of an energy efficient card but you have 2 of them. Yes I know the 590 is a dual gpu card but we all know they are tweaked down versions of the 580 core.

A pair of GTX680's actually do use less wattage than a GTX590. 536 vs 572. Its not a bunch but its still less.

That said, I agree, a 1050 watt power supply is enough for pretty much anything you could possibly fit in a case. Unless its a faulty power supply, its enough wattage.

I found more showing more power than the 590 than less so I went with higher

lol seems alot of folks got varying degrees of power consumptions when running their tests. but if ya look at it from the pins/slot vs using a meter at wall the 680sli will hold a higher wattage mark 590 has 2 8pin @150w each plus the slot @75 so 375w the 680 has a 75w 6pin and 150w 8pin plus the slot @75w so 300watts times 2 = 600watts yes thats the mathematical formula and we all agree they dont normally pull that but same can be said for the 590 as well. its an apples to oranges comparison but still all in all the 1050 watter should be fine unless as stated its faulty
