Antec 550W 2.0 diff between EPS12V & ATX12V 2.01?

I'm having trouble at the Antec web site differentiating between 2 power supplies for a system I'm building. AMD 3700, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI.

One is TP2-550EPS12V and the other is TPII-550. They both have dual 24 pin rails & both are about the same price, and seem almost identical.

The EPS one says it's EPS12V complaint/ATX12V 2.01 compatible, has 2 fans not one and supposedly is server related. I don't know what eps12V means, but if it's atx12v compatible & has even more, seems like it would be the one to buy seeing as their the about the same price.

I called Antec Tech Support and they didn't know the difference. Amazing, huh? We're all alone on some of these things. Anybody have any 1st hand experience? A possible showstopper is MSI says their board needs -5V for Soundblaster, which V2.0 PS don't have, but some have said it will work without -5V. I'm trying to get answers to this from MSI & forums.

Any help appreciated. It's the last holdup in ordering all the parts to build my system.

Regards, Ron

well unfortunartely many people have lots of problems with psu's without -5v and MSI boards. to be honest i wouldnt recommend risking it. as to differentiationg between the 2 psu's the only thing i can thing of is maybe one is a UK version and the other is US version. i cant be sure though.

where are u based and what is your budget and we may be able to find you a better suited psu for your motherboard

Save the trouble differentiating and pick up a 520w powerstream instead :)

Thanks for recommendation of OCZ PowerStream 520. After reading fasteddies posts, sounds like a 1 rail PowerStream 520 will give me the -5V for my MSI K8N Neo4 SLI mobo, and that 1 rail actually has advantages over dual rail which would not give me -5V and would force me to the DFI mobo, which is overkill as I'm not an overclocker.

The only last question is whether the PowerStream 520 is enough. computerpro3 in a post recommending PS for high end SLI systems listed only 4, very expensive ps, one being a 600W OCZ. He indicated the 520 might not do it for 2 6800GTs (an maybe eventually 4800 x2), relegating the 520 to more 2x6600 SLI system. I noticed the OCZ 600 is an ATX12V dual rail, yet surprisingly has the -5V I need for the MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI. It's 2 rail, so the 1 rail advantage with AMD systems goes away, but maybe at 600 watts, 2 rail will never have a balancing problem

If this is true, I'm done then with my homework on a power supply that will work with the Neo4 Platinum SLI which requires the -5V for the Creative Soundblaster to function. If the dual rail 600 with -5 is the answer, I'll post it to some other forums where we've been discussing this problem. There will be a lot of happy campers who have been wrestling with this Neo4 Power Problem, although they might not like the $212 price.

Thanks, Ron
