Andre's Z77 Personal Rig

There is also a gigabyte board i saw recently probably at CES that has such a great looking heatsink on the chipset, i will post a picture of that if i find out what model it is.

Update: yes it is this one here. this sort of design of heatsink is probably my favorite i just love all those little layers it has it looks so nice in my opinion.

I was going to get myself one of these for my Grayscale project :D
Original wanted to go with the X79-UD3, but I read that if you got one with an older bios it would barely even overclock and it might actually catch fire, so I decided to save myself the hassle and pay €50,- more.
Imo, €250,- for a board like the UP4 is a really good price! :)

Need to decide on a proper case though, which is really hard considering my special wishes but I'll make a seperate thread for that

Also; I wish my dad was into computers that much! Instead he thinks he does, but all he knows is how he swaps out RAM, an HDD or a video card  And that was even back in the day when HDDs used IDE and video cards didn't require power calbes :p

Edit; Btw, all sites tell me that this is a regular ATX board. Looking at the mounting holes it does look like one, but I'm not sure as I wonder how they got the huge 2011 socket and 4 extra memory banks on a regular ATX board O_o'
Do ya happen to know this?

That is great! I know boards like the Rampage are great but I'm getting a bit sick of the red myself, I'd prefer something like the UP4 with the grey I think those look great.

Interested to see what case you decide on :)

My dad is an electronics engineer and he's been into computers ever since Apple II in the late 70s/early 80s :) and always had high end systems for himself.

Well if you look at the layout of a Z77 board vs the X79, the z77 boards have a row of mosfets or something next to the IO where the extra bank of memory is on x79, so they must have a different layout for x79 since those boards don't seem to have the same large heatsink there. I really am not sure how the larger socket works, though!

some x79 boards like the rampage iv extreme are a bit wider, but not taller and you can see they are able to fit a small heatsink in between the memory slots and IO

I personally think the ROG stuff is just a tad overpriced for what you get. Or well, at least you get a tonne of stuff that most people don't need...

Had a closer look and the UP4 is indeed regular ATX. Pretty good layout if you can get a socket with almost twice the pins and 4 extra RAM slots on the same size mainboard as the Z77 boards. The heatsink on the top look quite beefy on the UP4 btw :D

Red colour schemes are becoming the new Blue colour schemes. I prefer to be original so I decided to go all black (original name was the Black Beast, the logo is my avatar). Might throw in some green accents but I'm not sure yet. Also not sure if I want to add green Bitfenix Spectre LED fans in the front. It would look kind of cool but on the other side I'm totally done with LEDs as I've arrive at the stage where I think they start to look a bit christmassy (and sometimes even childish when overdone) :(

Considering to go with a matte black Switch 810 right now. I know a S810 is pretty generic and a lot of people have one, but it seems to suit my needs best. And at least I'll get in a matte black, which is used a lot less than the glossy (ew) black one and the white one (which does look good, but isn't what I'm looking for) :)

It has been my pleasure :) .

So you got quite a collection of video recording devices there. For the moment I am using an old Sony from 2003, it's crap but the pics are still acceptable, the only bad thing about it is the video quality, it simply sucks, low res!

Well I was playing the campaign of BF3 yesterday and I was also keeping an eye on the forum and my mail and newegg, cause I remembered about the 6100 and 6300, and taking a peek at the prices ( they haven't changed ) and I noticed bad framerates in BF3 all this time. I looked at the CPU usage ant it was about 98% average and my card was in between 50% - 70% usage so I closed Chrome and everything changed for the better. so ... I do think that the CPU needs to be replaced fast.. and that Tahiti LE 7850 is very expensive. A card I'd also be considering would be a 7770, but I don't know about that.

My overclock seems to be stable at 918/1053, but I wish I could have gone higher on the core. Voltages are 1.33V in 3d mode and 1.29 in 2d. Cause of that freeze problem I have been forced to increase the 2d Volts and set the 2d clocks as high as those of the 3d clocks... so far it seemed to have made a difference... but I'm still testing.

I started with digital pictures back on my dad's Canon G2 back in 2002.

I only use the S100 for video since it's the only one that has fairly good 1080p and the only one that actually auto focuses properly as it's recording. the G11 doesn't even have 720p video and the G12 and S8000 do have 720p but it's fairly bad quality and neither of them autofocus properly mid video so if you go up close to something with it they don't focus on it properly.

Have you had you eye on people you know and ebay craigslist etc? I know I sold all Mara's AMD stuff including the 990FX ud7 motherboard the 965 BE and memory, the 2 4890s, a power supply, a hard drive, an optical drive as a package for dirt cheap to someone i know.

If you can find someone offloading a bunch of stuff as a package that's willing to let it go for cheap you might be able to get a pretty large upgrade all for the price of one or two components.

That's interesting you say the card was at 50%-70% usage? that doesn't sound like it's scaling properly because even new cards are used 100% during most games/

I agree though probably the CPU needs to be replaced.

also memory usage does add up i know the way i use the computer i never close anything and i always have tons of things open and every time i look at memory usage it's always around 11-12gb and that's before even getting into any games. so if you have less memory and you have some things open it could use up memory that is much needed in game and case issues too.

I totally agree about the ROG stuff -- I also don't like the whole "gaming branded" stuff, I think it's a bit tacky. Same goes with stuff like Razer, I don't like very much either. I also don't like red very much so that doesn't help me to like ROG ;)

I really like all black and black/grey now too. MSI has a new board for X79 coming out they said "in preparation for intel's new 2011 chip in mid 2013"

(See 3:09: http://youtu.be/vEmrbgC1n8E)

I agree I generally am not a huge fan of LED's either. I do do have some white led's in mine but I keep them off 99% of the time. I haven't been a huge fan of LED fans for a while to be honest because they remind of "the old days" but I think they can be fine if the rest of the build isn't too crazy.

Green is actually a color I've always kind of liked for LED's but I've never done it myself in all these years. I have done a bit of green UV way back in 2004 but it was always mixed with blue, never on it's own. I think a lot of black with some green can work very nicely.

I can't say the 810 is my favorite case (I'm not a huge fan of plastic) but it certainly is a very practical high functionality case. Matte sounds like it will look a lot nicer than glossy, but I wonder if it scuffs a lot?

I don't hate the look of the 810's (there's some weird lines going on in the optical bay cover area though) I am very interested to see what you come up with!!!

heading over to the thread now :)

I'll figure something out sometime soon, Going Bulldozer/Piledriver is my best option so far, they are cheap and a bit better than what I have... As a motherboard this one will have to do although there are better motherboards at good prices... The graphics is the hardest part to get... a good graphics card like the 7870 Tahiti LE for example is way out of my reach and upgrading from what I use now to something just a little better... not worth it.

And yes my card isn't used 100% all the time... For example, I was stress testing my Graphics card earlier for quite a bit with BF3... and I alt+tab'ed for a sec and took a screenshot for you to show you the GPU usage and the CPU usage. Here's the pic :

Bottleneck_zps84afed24.jpg

that looks like a little bit of a bottleneck to me... What do you think?

the afterburn pop up blocks the graph a bit but i see gpu only dropped when you went out of the game but it's being used fine in game, but still not 100% for either core which is interesting beccause i am used to always seeing 100% use for all the cards i've used. i i suppose the scaling for dual core cards wasn't as good with the earlier ones.

it's too bad amd couldn't have put out something a bit better for a decent price, bulldozer and pile are alright though.

for graphics id say look for something like a gtx 570 or 6900 series real cheap on ebay or craigslist and you might get lucky, or if you can find someone you know getting rid of something. if you can get a graphics card for cheap i imagine the cpu will bottleneck that though.

i see that it's using most of the cpu but i wouldn't be able to tell how much it is bottle necking. i'm sure a new cpu wouldn't hurt though, it wouldn't be the first time a cpu slowed things down.

Sorry about the popup blocking the graph, but you'd see the same thing for both cores, not going to 100% is some parts of the game. In some games it does go 100% when the CPU Usage is lower, BF3 is the most CPU intensive game I've seen so far. Crysis 2 too but that indeed uses 100% of my graphics card wether I use minimum/medium/maximum settings. The new COD Black Ops 2 uses the GPU close to 100% most of the time... but BF3... nope.

I took a peek at the 570 on ebay, and they are still pretty damn expensive... most of the prices... I'd rather get a 4870 x2 which is faster,cheaper... (dx10 tho), also very power hungry too. A 6950 would be really cool but also a bit expensive...

Will see...

i know most the last gen cards are still listed fairly high closer to the price they would be when new. certainly no one would be looking at them for that price as they would just go with a current gen card, but i just mean if you can find a 570 or 6970 type card for really cheap somewhere or from someone on a fourm somewhere may for around $100-130 that would be a good value and a pretty good upgrade.

i know that myself and my father have no problem selling stuff for fairly cheap to good people, but we just don't have any new stuff spare at the moment. the best i have here is a couple of 4800 cards 1 4870 and one 4890. If i had a spare 6000 card though I would sell it around around $100

Oh btw, I just *have* to ask this;
Judging from your siggy you're quite the audiophile but you don't have a sound card? O_o'

thats my asus extreme max v im water blocking it so thats most of the red gone using all 4 ram slots so you wont see the red got 2 gpus and a rog sound card and the rest of the red on the mobo like the sata i jsut carbon vinyl them carefully aswell as the sides of where the gpus and ram go into and geting these uv blue dust covers to sit completely over the pci e etc that im not using so you wont see no red on my board i prefer blue and black boards but thats me xD

Those are some nice components there. You were probably cleaning the dust off? Those Noctua fans looks so good, high quality materials can be seen.

How much did your temps drop after re-applying thermal paste?

This is proper cable management.

I moved one of the roof fans into the rear because i didn't like the lookf of the empty mesh area in the back. I was planning on just adding another fan into the back, but i didn't want more exhaust fans than intake, so i just moved one. I did clean it while i had it out though.

I took a few pictures of the socket area and the other side of the memory while the cooler was out.

before it was hitting mid 80's and even higher at times at 1.35v which is way too high. now it doesn't go above mid 70's at 1.35v.

Thanks man :)

Sans Digital MobileRAID MR2UT+B

Here is a video and some pictures from while I was playing around with the raid box.

I will probably end up just using it as a once or twice a week backup so I only turn it on a couple times a week or so. I didn't leave the fan disconnected because with the cover on there is no ventilation for the top section.

Hey man,

Watched your vid, that RAID thing looks awesome. I see you got a couple of drives in there, and I was wondering, cause I heard that in a RAID config both drives have to be usually the same make, same latencies, speeds, buffer size... don't have much experience really...

Anyway you took that fan out of the equation, have you put the top on? How do you control that thing, trough a USB? That thing on the top looks like the power supply of the whole thing, I wouldn't worry about it getting too hot, it doesn't eat a lot of power. I've heard that some standard modern hard drives have a power consumption as low as 8W... and you got a WD green in there which are very low on power consumption. I remember back a couple of years ago WD Green drives were so unreliable, most of the reviews about it on online store's forum said they were bad and they were dying... I never got to find out myself cause in a few months when I went back to see how prices evolved they doubled in price and that's how I am stuck with a 160gigs old drive. But I heard that the greens are a lot better now.

damnnnnn that is one sleeekkkk cable managmunt there nice and tidy not a single mess 120% perfection nice one :)

I was looking at your build thread, and your old hardware. The sabertooth still looks good by today's standards. It has that futuristic theme that you see in some games like... halo for example games if you look at the chipset heat-sink :).

I am trying that new benchmark Catzilla and it's a pain.. it crashes ( some crashes could be cause of my overclock ) it won't start... it's buggy as hell.
