AMD's Zen core has double the number crunching performance of Steamroller

He finished zen before leaving. .

IAs B says, him leaving shows that it's finished and ready :)

I wouldn't be so sure.

Unless you were actually part of the AMD Zen design team then you can't know for certain. I don't think AMD has said much on that either, they've only said the following:

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/cpu-guru-jim-keller-leaves-amd.html

AMD Spokesperson said:
"Jim was responsible for overseeing the teams defining the roadmaps for AMD’s CPU cores, systems IP and server and client SoCs. Jim’s departure is not expected to impact our public product or technology roadmaps, and we remain on track for “Zen” sampling in 2016 with first full year of revenue in 2017."

Notice the way it doesn't say whether it's finished or not, also notice the way it says sampling in 2016, not release in 2016.

I'm really rather hoping Zen turns out well. I'm still happily running on an Ivy Bridge setup, and aside from wishing I could have a better looking motherboard I have no inclination to upgrade within the next year.

Fingers crossed when the first Zen samples hit developers next year I'll know whether or not my next upgrade will be to Skylake, or if I'll wait just a little longer and see what AMD pull out of their hat.

Yeah i seem to remember hearing that it had taped out already and a large part of the delay was waiting for GloFo's 14nm FinFet process to be ready for mass production. So sampling will be measuring yields etc.

Also this doesn't need to beat Intel's best it just needs to be damned competitive in the mid range. That's where the real volume is, if they can be an attractive option for system integrators and low to mid range builds at a reasonable profit margin then AMD have bought themselves some time.

Although if that happens i bet Intel is ready with a whole bunch of stuff so they can just drop the mic and walk off stage.

If he's left and it's not finished then AMD will be bang in trouble.

So I will stick to my philosophy, thanks.

He was responsible for defining the roadmap, which to me seems like hes done most of the work and has left the easier stuff for the regular lot.

To me as he didn't leave making alot of noise I think his work was done.

That's the thing though, it's speculation.

None us know what went down or what the current state of the Zen core is now. All we can do is speculate, unless you actually work for AMD there's no way you can know for sure.

We're just going to have to wait until we hear more, which hopefully will be sooner rather than later.

Just sayin'

I hope it will bring back the comptetition in the market. The whole new architecture seems to be good in paper. I hope it will perform well in real world usage too.

I'm realy like the AMD APU-s because they can offer good price/performance value for most of the PC users in a really affordable price. (It's very important in Eastern Europe)

I think that Intel processors are a bit overpriced so the Zen's succes is a key to lower the prices.

Look at the guy's employment history ! he's obviously very free spirited and doesn't like being tied to any one company. He goes in, does his thing, then he leaves.

When I used to do graphic design I always did it freelance. That way if I was sick and didn't want to work I wouldn't have to.

It makes absolutely no sense keeping some one who has achieved what you have paid them to do on the payroll. Especially in AMD's circumstances.

Well.. there's a bit of a difference between graphic design and the design of a high performance x86 CPU core that can cost upwards of $400m of R&D to develop. ;)

It's still speculation though, we won't know what truly went down or what state the design is in currently. You're only going to know that if you work for AMD. People who try to spin it are just voicing opinion.

We've just got to wait for more information, I hope for AMD's sake their new CPUs hit the market in 2016 as opposed to 2017.

Anyway, that's enough blabbering from me. :p
