AMD's Zen core has double the number crunching performance of Steamroller

AM D's Zen architecture is focusing heavily on single threaded performance, with double the amount of ALUs, Floating-point units per core and even supports SMT. Should Intel be scared?

I really hope AMD surprise everyone with a power house of a chip, We need proper competition.

We do, have you seen the prices of Intel chips recently?

50 quid for the cheapest Skylake Pentium and even the older chips have gotten more expensive. The 4790k is now £270 at Scan...

PS AMD graphs never fail to make me laugh. That is not a 40% incline, this isn't how graphs work. Go home AMD marketing team.

I doubt I will be changing to Zen now I went X99. I think my 5820k will last me a good five years tbh.

Exciting though, especially when you think about the dude that created it and his past.

Im only worried hes already left......

With AMD being so tight with money ATM I'm guessing he was hired from the start for one new CPU architecture where he was supposed to leave afterwards from the start.

Right now the Zen design is done, so him leaving will have no impact on it anymore, though it would have been nice to have his influence for following iterations. the man is a legend

Keller has moved a lot on the past, from AMD to SiByte in 1999, then to PA Semi in 2004, then apple in 2008 and back to AMD in 2012. I'm sure he would want to find a new challenge after zen.

i do really hope that Zen is all its hyped up to be, i for one would be interested in doing an all AMD build

I don't feel the hype. It's kind of sad. It feels like the last hope more than hype for something groundbreaking. I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to have a reason to switch to AMD.

I'm in "Wait & See" mode. Somehow I can't see myself wanting to switch from the i7-6700k I just upgraded to from an FX-8350.

Although, thinking about it logically... Given how much AMD's marketshare has fallen, and how much of a hole they've dug for themselves, Zen I would imagine is going have to do more than just match Intel's offerings, it's going to have to beat them, and probably decisively too. Otherwise, it probably won't improve their marketshare much, they really need to give people good reason to ditch Intel.

Also, the 2016 release could very well be 2017 too based on some prior comments from those at AMD. We shall see though.

He finished zen before leaving.

The main issue I have is believing that AMD can continue to build on products post Zen. IF Zen kicks butt I really hope AMD doesn't rest on their laurels almost immediately after launch.

It's completely normal for a designer to leave once he's done his job.

You wouldn't hire a painter and decorator to design and paint your living room and then pay him to sit around in it after :)

As B says, him leaving shows that it's finished and ready :)
